Ok I did an action to get rounded corners, it worked GREAT but now I can't get rid of the checkerboard background behind it, when I try to just save it CS3 turns the checkerboard to a solid white border around the damn photo. Is there any way to get rid of this?yes i googled. this will bug me and all i want to do is figure it out and go to bed.

save it as something that supports alpha channelslike a png, for instance[Edited on December 7, 2008 at 1:57 AM. Reason : the checkerboard pattern indicates transparency]
12/7/2008 1:56:59 AM
can i then transfer it to jpeg later?well when i save it in jpeg it turns into white solid background [Edited on December 7, 2008 at 1:59 AM. Reason : hhj]
12/7/2008 1:57:36 AM
no, jpegs don't support transparencyyou can't put a circle inside a square and expect there not to be some overlapthe only other thing you could do is fill the background with the color of the background you're putting the image onbut PNG's are the way to go... i use them for literally EVERYTHING except for large photos... so much better.

.gif also supports transparent backgrounds
12/7/2008 2:00:55 AM
^ty !!ahahahaha shhhhh
12/7/2008 2:02:10 AM
yes, gif does support transparency... but not in the traditional sense. it just supports marking certain colors as transparent... a mask of sorts... not true alpha channels... as such, they only support two bit states... off or on... no levels in-between, so transitions look harsh and there's no real way to effectively do drop shadows or anything of the like.png's, however, support actual alpha channelsPNG IS THE WAY TO GOwhy does everyone hate it ]

everyone hates PNGs for transparency because it's irritating as fuck to get them to consistently render on a web page, for what it's worth :pcertain versions of IE like to fill it in with a gray background regardless of the page's background and you have to use a javascript h4x to get it properly rendered
12/7/2008 2:09:36 AM
^that's because it's IE and its broken graphics implementation... and, frankly, i've never had a problem with that while doing web designand if i recall correctly it was all but fixed in IE7
12/7/2008 2:10:21 AM
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.aspIE6 is still 20% as of Nov [Edited on December 7, 2008 at 2:11 AM. Reason : * 22% in Sept, my bad]
12/7/2008 2:11:07 AM
haha such a damn cute picture THANKS GUISE
12/7/2008 2:11:35 AM
that's why I use IE8, its fully fixed.
12/7/2008 2:11:37 AM
lol np kiwisorry i went into the intricacies of alpha channels and the like, i tend to talk/type too much when i'm drunk
12/7/2008 2:13:44 AM
ps if you never encountered the issue, you must have never done compatibility tests in IE6it's a well-known problem, and until the last year or two >50% of your users were probably seeing gray shit for backgrounds instead of the page proper http://letmegooglethatforyou.com/?q=ie6+png+transparency
12/7/2008 2:16:05 AM
seeif i'm designing something for my personal use, i just use javascript to detect if someone is using something retarded like IE6 and tell them to go switch to firefox before they look at my sitei can do that because i don't care if they see it or not, hahafor clients, i make the site as compatible as possible - that's the only time i've run into problems.
12/7/2008 2:18:07 AM
.png is not a choice for anything web development - you lose a huge batch of corporate users who have IT departments too slow to upgrade and other people who just don't know there are upgrades available. For personal use I use them religiously, but I want websites to work with everything - even old browsers and mobiles. Another alternative would be an artificial vignette and/or just adding a background layer of a more desirable color in photoshop - black or blue or something...
12/7/2008 7:17:32 AM
^I know and that pisses me off. PNGs have been around too long to still not be the "standard".That said, I use them whenever possible...
12/7/2008 7:42:23 AM
PNG is a standard. No one "hates" it.Any respectable developer knows how to write code to render it properly on their platform, and any knowledgeable graphic designer uses it as their deliverable format in place of GIF, JPG, or BMP.
