"Support the Heels in their return to the top of the college football world!!

The 1997 College football year came to a close, and a look at the final polls revealed the North Carolina Tar Heels at the #4 position. Coming off of a 42-3 victory over Virginia Tech, they were 4th ranked team in the country, with a record of 11-1 (7-1). The Heels were ranked higher than such dynasties as USC, Florida, Miami, Georgia, Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and essentially every other school you can mention. Only the two unbeatens, (Nebraska and Michigan), and the team that dealt Carolina their only loss, (Florida State), finished the season ranked higher. This was the 2nd consecutive year that Carolina had finished the season ranked in the top 10 in the country. The season marked their 8th consecutive winning season; it also gave the Heels a 6-year record of 55-18, which is bested only by Nebraska (68 wins), Florida State (64), Florida (63), Ohio State (59), Penn State (58), Tennessee (58), Texas A&M (56) and Alabama (56) in the same time period. The victory over Virginia Tech in the gator bowl was the 3rd consecutive bowl victory for UNC. Only two other schools could boast that feat; Nebraska and LSU. North Carolina was on the brink of establishing its football program as a DYNASTY.

The North Carolina defense had established itself as one of the most feared defenses in the country, finishing the year allowing only 209.3 yds/game. That figure was second only to the NATIONAL CHAMPION Michigan, which yielded 206.9 yds/game. Interestingly Carolina led the country in defensive yds/play. Opposing offenses could only manage 3.3 yds a play against the stout Carolina defense. They AVERAGED forcing a 3 and out on every posession. The defense yielded only 13.0 pts/game to opposing offenses. North Carolina was the only school ranked in the top 5 in the nation in all four major defensive categories. Carolina was 2nd in the country in total yards allowed per game, 3rd in pass defense, 4th in run defense and 5th in points allowed. Facing the Carolina defense was tough sledding for any offense. North Carolina was the only school in the country to have a finalist for the Butkus, Lombardi and Thorpe Awards, which are given to the nation's top linebacker, lineman and defensive back, respectively.
The defense boasted 3 First-Team All-Americans, (the first time in conference HISTORY that team had 3 First-Team All-Americans on the same side of the ball) in end Greg Ellis, corner Dre Bly, and linebacker Brian Simmons; and many other players recieving numerous all-america and all-conference accolades, including Brandon Spoon, Robert Williams, Omar Brown, Vonnie Holliday, and Kivuusama Mays. The 209.3 yds/game yield, was the lowest total in CONFERENCE HISTORY since Clemson in 1963! It also marked the 3rd Straight year that the Heel's defense yielded LESS than 300 yds/game; (in 1996, they yielded 225.6, and in 1995, 267.3.)

The offense, while not as dominating as the defense, was still quite impressive. In the final game of the season (the gator bowl against Virginia Tech), North Carolina set records for points in a bowl game (42) and margin of victory in a bowl game (39). The quarterback, Chris Keldorf, threw for 290 yards and garnered MVP honors. During the season, reciever Na Brown cought over 50 passes for the second consecutive and set a Carolina record (no longer stands today) with 55 passes. Running back Jonathon Linton rushed for over 1,000 yards on the season marking the 24th time in history that a Carolina Back gained over 1000 yards. North Carolina is the ONLY school to have that many backs with over 1,000 yards in a single season. All-Conference players on offense included, Jeff Saturday, Alge Crumpler, and Jonathon Linton.

The year also marked, unfortunately, the departure of head coach Mack Brown and the end of the Carolina dynasty. The man responsible for one of the nation's best defenses (defensive coordinator Carl Torbush), took over the head coaching job, and things did not turn out the way one would hope.

However, after a few lackluster years, North Carolina hired head coach Butch Davis and the Tar Heels are again approaching an era like Brown's.

In Davis's first season at the helm, the Tar Heels finished 4-8 (3-5).
This season, with one of the youngest teams in the country the Tar Heels finished 8-4 (4-4) and are headed to a bowl game for the first time since 2001.

The future looks bright, support the resurgence of the Tar Heel Football program."
