Do you think its "fair" for a person to be upset over their own kind getting called a name by the same type of person?
Example:
A lesbian calling another lesbian a dyke and then another lesbian getting upset over it?
A white person calling another white person a cracker and then a white person getting upset over it?
Etc...etc...

What does fair have to do with it? I think it's pretty fucking stupid, but I also think it's stupid to get too worked up about getting called a name in the first place. Unless you're 2 or something, then it's ok.

It's fair to get upset and maybe say "that word makes me uncomfortable", but if the two people involved are fine, there's not much else to say.

If it's someone not even involved in the conversation, and you're not perpetuating some egregiously false misconception (uhm, saying a PMSing skank must be schizo, when the public is already grossly misinformed about all mental health manners - that kind of thing)

Tell her to STFU and stuff it

Some people look for any excuse to get "offended." I'll be honest, I don't think I've ever been offended, at least not in the sense that most folks use that word.

So let me see if I've got this right

it goes,

Ice Age,*
Stone age, - Nomadic
Copper age, *
Bronze age, *
Iron age, *
Agricultural age,
Middle age,
Dark age,
Early Modern period,
Renaissance,
Age of Discovery,
Post modern age,
Atomic age,
Space age,
And right now we're bridging the gap between the Information age and the offended/lawyer age

oh what the hell. bullying has occurred for generations. my parent's generation turned out just fine. it's only our generation, which has been babied to hell, that has a problem with it.

^^ Key word

Childhood

They obviously aren't talking about kids, since they told them to grow up, implying they are no longer children.

^ Actually our parents generation kind of sucks

^^ do you have any basis for that assertion?

bullying has always caused problems for society (napolean hitler etc), we just have new tools to quantify it.

^ it holds true in adulthood as well

there are other studies

People who say they never get offended by name calling are damn liars. Let someone call your mother, daughter, son, wife, grandfather, etc. something derogatory and see if you just shrug it off and tell them to grow up.

Give me a break. Not saying you need to kill someone over name calling, but you can't tell me you would have NO reaction.

It depends upon the intent of the "name calling"

If someone is clearly intending to insult of offend you, or is obviously acting in a serious and hostile way, then it would be perfectly right to get pissed at them.

If someone is obviously just joking, or uses a non-PC term in a non-serious and casual context, you are just a butthurt idiot if you start getting offended or pissed at them.

Then again, if someone makes a joke that is unintentionally but obviously over the line or inappropriate (for example, tells a cancer joke about your mother, because they know your mother has cancer), it would be perfectly okay to notify them that they crossed the line. Getting pissed at them wouldn't be right, but getting mildly offended and telling them to lay off those kinds of jokes would be fine.

I agree with that, but it seemed to be given as a blanket statement for all instances of name-calling. That's what I disagree with.

If I know the person making the comments I can usually figure out their intentions. It's the new people that I meet and hear them say something, that's when I can't figure out what they were trying to get at.

Is that like when blacks call each other nigger/nigga?

Doesn't seem to offend them. Rather, they seem to like it, and some use it as a term of affection (chick to guy: "you my nigger/nigga")

this is sort of relevant, but not exactly on topic. anyway, i've always thought the term "blacks" (or the term "a black") to be sort of derogatory and non PC. i mean not that you have to use the term "african american" every time. but "blacks" seems worse than even just plain old "black people"

it might just be the way i grew up hearing it used...it always seems to have a (somewhat) negative connotation.

No it's not fair.

Screw them for being so uppity and for not having a sense of humor. Get that sand out of their vagina.

I'm a mutt, and since I am comprised of so many races, I feel able to say anything derogatory and get away with it.

"Shut the hell up, cracka."

"Who you callin a cracka?"

"Dude, I'm part white."

"Oh okay, it's cool, cracka."
