...off.

I'm thinking of spending a few months backpacking in Costa Rica. My colleagues are spending their severance on cosmetic surgery and handbags. Doesn't sound so appealing to me.

What would you do with $15,000 in severance and unlimited vacation time?

If normal people spend severance pay on plastic surgery and handbags, then no, no I haven't.

if you are going to backpack costa rica then i hope you know spanish well. is seems like the only people who speak any english there are at the resorts. other then that i would think that backpacking europe would be cool. what about starting your own business?

Part of me says save as much of that money as you can and get a couple of part time jobs 'til you land on your feet with a new real job.

The other part says you probably won't have the opportunity to just go disappear and do whatever the fuck you want many times in your life, take advantage.

Handbags. I like it!

I'm thinking about starting my own knock-off designer accessories business. People just don't have they money for the real thing these days.

And I live in Florida. People are very plastic. My friend said, "Oh my god. Fake boobs are such a deal. Only $6,000. You don't even have to pay for them for a year!" Then she told me how she was so scared that the silicone would leak into her body and kill her.

Just be prepared later in life when shit happens and that $15k would be able to fix a lot of problems.

But for me, assuming the rest of my circumstances fit, I'd take off somewhere.

I'm an ad writer/Web content manager for a major hotel company.

I've already backpacked Costa Rica, but I'd love to do it again and hit up Panama while I'm at it. Bocas del Toro sounds awesome.

It seems like the wrong season to backpack Europe. Australia and New Zealand would be fun, but money goes much further in Central America.

What are your expenses and savings? There is a good chance this economy is still going to be poopoo well into next year and you'll still be jobless baring a waitress or bartender job or something. If you literally don't need the money, then put half of it away and blow the rest of it.

Is that 15k pre or post tax?

Seriously, save that shit. Even if you're fortunate enough to have no student loans or any type of debt to pay off, I'm sure that money can go to something remotely responsible.

My lease is up at the end of the month, so once that's up I can put my stuff in storage and do some travel. Expenditures are about $500 a month, not including food. I have about $10k in savings.

$15k is post-taxes.

Where have you traveled to in the world??

With $15,000 I'd try and put half aside and take the other half and go backpacking somewhere like Thailand or go back to Europe and hit up the spots that I missed during my last trip.

I feel like Costa Rica is a rather easy trip that can always be done.

Asia would be very cool, but I'd definitely lean more toward Australia or New Zealand.

Central America is definitely easy, but it's a very inspiring place. The culture is so different and the landscape is absolutely gorgeous. Plus, I surf, and Costa Rica is an awesome surfer's destination.

No I don't mean take us with you. I just mean give us love (in the form of $$).

I sent you an email not 10 minutes ago, but I sent it to your work email. Did you get laid off already, because if so, then I'm betting you aren't going to get that email!

if you find a new job quickly you can negotiate a later starting date and go take a nice vacation knowing you have an income when you get back

$15k is a lot but it wont last long when you have nothing else coming in

This thread makes me want to get to know lucyinthesky better.

To bad California is chock full of chicks that are just like her co-workers.

And to answer the thread, Costa Rica would be awesome. I went backpacking through Guatemala and Belize, which is pretty incredible as well. It's amazing going from a tropical high-altitude jungle to the cayes and reefs of Belize in a few days hike. I didn't get a chance to hike through the Yucatan, but that's worth a look as well, I hear.

I'd stay away from El Salvadore and Nicaragua, since they are somewhat anti-American from what I hear.

As do I...but you can find cheap surfing trips to Costa Rica all the time.

Go to Europe and surf in Spain...I found a couple good spots when I was over there...and it's fucking Spain.
