Quote :
"Obama: Don't stock up on guns

December 8, 2008

BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Political Reporter

As gun sales shoot up around the country, President-elect Barack Obama said Sunday that gun-owning Americans do not need to rush out and stock up before he is sworn in next month.

"I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," Obama said at a news conference. "Lawful gun owners have nothing to fear. I said that throughout the campaign. I haven't indicated anything different during the transition. I think people can take me at my word."

But National Rifle Association spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said it's not Obama's words — but his legislative track record — that has gun-buyers flocking to the stores.

"Prior to his campaign for president, his record as a state legislator and as a U.S. Senator shows he voted for the most stringent forms of gun control, the most Draconian legislation, gun bans, ammunition bans and even an increase in federal excise taxes up to 500 percent for every gun and firearm sold," Arulanandam said.

Obama answered "yes" in 1996 to a questionnaire from an Illinois group on whether he supported a handgun ban. But he later said a staffer filled out that answer and he did not support a ban.

Nationally, background checks for gun purchases jumped nearly 49 percent during the week Obama was elected, compared with the same time period last year, according to the FBI's National Instant Background Check System.

Anecdotally, gun dealers around the country have reported spikes in sales. The Illinois State Rifle Association Reports gun sales for November were 38 percent higher than last year.

"We don't dispute [the gun sales hike] because the numbers from the federal system certainly confirm that there is increased activity out there. We just think it's a bit stupid," said Peter Hamm, spokesman for the Brady Campaign against Gun Violence.

"Anyone who thinks they need to rush out and buy a firearm clearly has not been paying attention to how quickly we make progress on this issue. We don't think these are first-time buyers. We think they are people who already have more than enough guns at their homes to protect themselves and are buying more.""

I was planning on saving up for a Bushmaster ACR, but if it's gonna be an issue, I'll probably just get a cheap AR-15 after Christmas.

I don't think he's gonna come for my guns, as in, the ones I already have.

I think it's possible he bans "assault weapons", which has been done before, or places a massive tax on gun purchases.

i heard there's a 12 month minimum wait on the bushmaster cause the manufacturer cut the production down to nothing because they are scared obama will make guns so expensive that your average redneck can't afford them anymore.

With all the war, economy, healthcare, etc issues on the table, anything that Obama would do with guns is on a way-back burner. Everyone's unfounded fears has already put a massive idiot tax on guns now and the dealers are laughing to the bank. Now is a bad time to buy because prices are inflated.

Obama isn't going to immediately step into office and piss everyone off by jumping off his platform.

bushmaster is shit btw get something else

yeah I'd say wait until the panic response buyers spend themselves out, prices freaking skyrocketed as soon as he got elected and most places are on backorder for the popular things

I have a feeling Obama is going to be a bit preoccupied with two wars and a failing economy and won't get around to pushing up a new Brady bill for a year or two, but I could be wrong

but given that nearly every cabinet/secretary/etc appointee he has picked for his team has a record of anti-gun stances and voting records or has been part of a group like the Brady Campaign, I would be shocked if he didn't move to increase regulations at some point in his presidency

He says "I believe in common-sense gun safety laws, and I believe in the second amendment," which is fine and good but there is a lot of flexibility in what his opinion of 'common-sense' is. With a vague nebulous term like that it could mean anything from just a ban on 'assault' weapons down to citizens only being allowed to own a single-shot, bolt action .22 rifle as an extreme example. We just don't know.

If he thinks making 100 hours of community service mandatory for college students IS common sense

Then I'd hate to see what he considers "common sense" to be in regards to guns

Basically, they haven't stepped up production to keep pace with the increased demand for (a) logistical reasons, and (b) if a ban on new sales was enacted, they'd be left holding the bag (guns in a warehouse that they couldn't sell)

That's where I'm placing my bet, too.

1. I, for the reasons you outlined, gain little comfort from his statement.
2. an "assault weapons" ban is still completely fucking stupid. The previous one was one of the stupidest, poorly written, piss-poor pieces of legislation to ever come out of Washington--and that is an accomplishment.

Yeah I agree, that's why I put 'assault' in quotes. Some of the qualifications that they deemed make a weapon an 'assault' type were downright laughable and harmless.

it is the stupidity of people that is driving up gun costs and slowing production. like many have mentioned, i don't think gun regulations are anywhere near a top priority at this point in time. seems best to wait it out but who knows when people will stop freaking out.

This rule also applies to ammo.

could it be that gun collectors and enthusiasts, just like all other breeds of consumers, will jump on any excuse to buy the things they like even if they can't really afford it? just like a woman will buy new shoes for whatever reason, or I'll buy new tools. It doesn't have to be a good excuse, just enough to convince themselves to do what they want to do.
