I've seen a lot of her work first hand and can vouch for her skill. Everyone seems extremely pleased with her, so if you need something done for a wedding or social function or movie/photo shoot or whathaveyou, check her out. The website is brand new and still under construction but it'll give you an idea of what she can do for you. She's also really easy to get along with, she's a sweetheart and good at making people feel comfortable.
Anyway, have a look!
And no I'm not buying an ad. I'VE PUT MY TIME IN HERE DAMMIT.

How do you pronounce "MzMetal"? Like "Ms. Metal"? 12/11/2008 6:21:51 PM |

The way she says it basically sounds like "Ms. Metal" but maybe with a subtle touch of zzzz, like "Mizz"
you know, for zazz

She definitely needs to get up more pictures, of better quality, work, and variety. That should be at the top of the to-do list for the website.

She needs to dramatically rethink that site.
It reads as "here are some pictures of me and my friend Mandy playing makeup". Not a professional portfolio, not well thought out, very very amateurish and desperate feel to the site. 12/11/2008 11:39:09 PM |

I agree, it looks tacky and half-assed. If it isn't half-assed then she just isn't intelligent enough to know that marketing yourself well is as important as being skilled, especially in an "industry" like that.
Just sayin'
And yeah, she should get other photos. I don't know anything about makeup, but still, nothing on that site makes me inclined to take her seriously. Her name is also a joke, and not conducive to seeming professional at all. I didn't know you had to be a character of some sort to apply makeup.
(Aside from your recommendation, of course, but that still has nothing to do with her site)
(Sorry for seeming like a dick. I'm sure she does great work, but think she would do herself justice to rethink some things) 12/11/2008 11:46:23 PM |

No offense taken, constructive criticism is just as valuable at this point as client interest
I'll relay the messages, anything else you folks could add would be wonderful
She's well-known in Wilmington under the "MzMetal" name and decided to keep it to retain the recognition, as well as setting herself apart from all the sally-sue makeup artists out there
But yeah she definitely is working on getting more in the gallery, like I said she did JUST make the site
What else about the site "screams desperation?"

It seems odd that there are a lot of pictures in the gallery that are full-body shots, rather than pictures that really highlight the makeup work.
The other thing I'd suggest is that a lot of the pictures seem to be of the same person wearing the same makeup, just from different angles. Maybe group them together somehow to show a complete sort of look? Higher resolution images could either help or hurt her as well, but I'd imagine they'd be something someone looking for makeup work would want to see.12/12/2008 4:18:32 PM |

so it sounds like the biggest thing right now is more, better quality pictures. And I agree, some sort of grouping system by model/style would be good once she gets more up.
Any other ideas for the site? Anything that would make it look more professional or inviting? Thanks on her behalf for all the help folks
note: all website considerations aside, do keep in mind that she is a very talented artist so if you need work done, don't get hung up on the website. Just shoot her an email

She'd do well to sit down with a brand/marketing person or designer.
The problem is, the site is laid out as a long-time professional organization.
She has no real breadth of portfolio, she has no breadth of customer recommendations. You don't make a recommendations page that has ONE recommendation on it. She should pair down that website to one to two pages of content.
One page for bio, introduction, specialties. One page for photos (and seriously crop the quanitity). Only one or two of her current gallery images is worth being displayed to clients (not for shitty work, but for horrible composition).
Keep it simple. A website should be a reflection of the business. Right now it looks like an empty shell of a website, very cookie cutter and amateur in composition and content. Take that analogy to the business itself, and you see the problem. 12/12/2008 6:42:19 PM |
