What does that have to do with anything?? I just call in every Monday and I get my weekly earnings (although it's not that much).

Because to receive unemployment you have to meet their weekly qualifications which often include searching for work.

^6 because one of the requirements is "are you available for work" for the week. and also if you contacted people about jobs.

if you are on vacation out of the country, even if you talk to people about jobs, if they wanted you to start the next day and you couldn't, you wouldn't be available for work and shouldn't get the benefits.

yes it does. if you turn down work, because you don't want it or because you can't be there when they need you, you should not get unemployment according to them.

basically he's saying if he gets a job offer and they ask him-"can you start tomorrow?"

if you are out of the country, chances are you can't.

job-denied.

Starting a free class at Central Piedmont Community College on "Job Seeking Skills." Should satisfy the requirement that I be enrolled in classes so I can get my waiting period on unemployment suspended early and get my money sooner.

after you send the resume, whats your protocol for following up? i just want some tips if you dont mind, you seem to be familiar with this process.

Generally, outside of sending a resume with a cover letter, there isn't all that much following up to do. If they find your resume and cover letter interesting, somebody will contact you about the job (of course). If you contact them the week after, then the week after, and so on until you get a response, they might just ignore your emails and shred your resume (being pesky about it will generally not help with most employers).

The real good thing to do is, when they offer you an interview, to make a solid impression and then, after you leave there, send a follow-up thank you note. If you send out the thank you note by email (this works for many employers, depending on how you made the initial contact for the position), send it out the next day in the morning or early afternoon. If you're mailing a thank you note, writing it up when you get back from the interview and dropping it in the mailbox will probably get it there the next day or the day after (and should work just as well). Definitely make sure you get into contact with them in some way after the interview.

And as for my news, well, no news = bad news! Still being strung along by the one company that wanted to make me an offer, so I'm applying to all sorts of jobs along the east & the gulf coast. Contacted a recruiter I spoke with at a past career fair today as well, and some of the government positions I applied for close this week (so I should hear back in a reasonable time from now).

The week before I found out everyone was being laid off, I put $3,000 into my IRA Roth, $1,500 toward my student loan, and $3,000 toward my mortgage. So my emergency fund was lower than I had planned.

It's gone way up, though, thanks to coupons, doing contract work, and my good ol' tax returns."

Contributions to a Roth IRA may be withdrawn without penalty. If over the past 3 years you have put in a total of $10k, and the value of your account is worth $15k (miraculous given the market now), you can take out $10k without penalty.

I just put $5k towards my Roth IRA for 2008 tax year, and I consider it part of my emergency fund. If you do use your Roth IRA as an emergency fund, just be sure you are aware of the impact that large market declines can have on it

This just popped up today. I might stop by to see if the people I met at northrop grumman are there. I'm pretty sure most of the openings you find there are going to be for mechanicals and electricals, but maybe some civvies and structural folks will find something.

^^ i'd say i was good at both my jobs. that doesn't mean shit when the economy is this bad, unfortunately. it sucks. sorry to hear about your friends.

^ NG would be fun to work for, i think. they sponsored my senior design project. (although they just gave us our money and never spoke to us again. they didn't even come back to judge our work.) and thanks for that link BTW.

How does the unemployment office know if you are fired or layed off? I am getting laid off at the end of the month and want to know if I need to get some kind of paperwork saying I was laid off due to economic reasons.

I believe your employer sends in the paperwork. I did not receive any but they knew.

When you start the unemployment process, I advise going down there in person and setting up an appointment ASAP. Dont count on only using the internet.

SO true. If I had only known this sooner. I spent 5 weeks getting shit straight over the phone and online. No money for 6 weeks is tough. Talk to someone in person.

Well that presents another problem, I live in NC but the company I work for is in Illinois. I have been paying IL taxes for the last 2 years.

When tax time comes around I end up filing a non resident form for IL and get a credit for the taxes I paid them and pay the difference to NC since taxes are higher in NC.

I really hope I dont have to make a trip to Chicago to file for unemployment, that would suck!

Actually when you file for it, they send a form to your former employer. Your former employer has the option to contest the claim. If this happens you both will meet with a social worker and she will listen to both sides. However, I still think you will be receiving payments its just if they contest and you lose you will have to repay what you got. Hope that helps.

My boss has contested several times and won. One girl was fired for stealing and still had the nerve to file for unemployment.

I think employers all pay "unemployment insurance" and then the state pays the benefits. The reason to contest unemployment claims though is, like any insurance, the more claims you have the higher your premium.
