lol, setting my sites on global economy straight off the bat. Running some film projects right now and managing about 10 people just on the multimedia side alone. Everyone of them are from NCSU, so I'm keeping the hiring pool pretty close to home.

So... yeah, I was laid off two days before I found out I was pregnant, and I have been looking for a job since. At this point, I am showing and its more than obvious. Also, I am pretty much just applying for jobs for unemployment purposes and the small hopes of landing one. So far I have had a few interviews (while not showing), but nothing yet. I have an in person interview Monday and a phone interview Tuesday. If I get a job before the little guy gets here, I plan to take some time off but I am planning on going back as soon as I can. I know there are laws that try to protect against discrimination, but I can also understand things from the employer's point of view and hiring a person that is a flight risk.

Does anyone have any insight on preggo ladies and the job search? Any interview tips for a pregnant lady?

And if I don't find something, its not that big of a deal, but it just helps to know if I'm wasting my time setting up interviews and what not.

^ Damn, that sucks. Do you have any customer service experience? There are a lot of companies now that outsource their customer service to "work from home" type companies. You'll probably have to weed through a lot of scams, but it's an option. I honestly can't see you landing any type of worthwhile job if they know you'll be taking maternity leave in a few months.

Apparently my company is looking for someone. I saw this posted on one of the manager's linked-in page:

Local restoration company seeks creative individual with a strong personality. Ideal candidate has a background in graphic design and/or marketing, a willingness to learn and take initiative with minimal direction. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be flexible and open to changing priorities and managing multiple tasks simultaneously. Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop highly recommended

I have no other info about the job but if anyone is interested, I can pass along the contact info of the person who posted it.

Yeah it was tough... I thought about engaging in something like that, but I am hesitant because of those scams. I was offered a job today, and I think I may have another offer coming in the next week. But regardless, these places will find out soon enough and I have to work something out. I don't plan on taking a whole lot of maternity leave (Max 6 weeks). I still feel horrible for not saying anything even though I don't have to.

My companies hiring for Denver or Charlotte. Basically trying to backfill my position that I left in Charlotte. Ideally we're looking for someone with analytical SQL skills (OLAP, star schema, etc) but also with good client facing business/data analytic skills.

aka someone who's comfortable in UNIX/SQL environments but also very comfortable presenting in front of clients.

When you're told that the company is "moving quickly with interviews".... do you take that to mean they are moving quickly with the offer/hiring process as well?

Almost. I was laid off towards the end of '08 and was unemployed with the exception of a couple of short term, temp gigs until last fall. I finally found a job last fall and was laid off again in February. Found the job I'm currently at in May.

So all-in-all, I would say I've had about a year of employment since this thread was made. There were several job offers that fell through for various reasons throughout that time.

guise - have any of you applied to jobs on craigslist? it seems a little sketchy, but desperate times...
many of them ask to send a cover letter, but then don't specify what their company is. for example "____ needed for highly efficient ____ firm!" should i just make the cover letter very vague? i always assume the cover letter is where you highlight your area of expertise for working at that particular company. but if you don't know what the company is, how can you do that? normally i would ignore that kind of posting, but i'm getting a bit needy.

Sounds pretty sketch. I think the one guy I contacted off CL called me back and asked to converse about the position.

I am pretty sure any other answer than that would be breaking the law. I dont know what it is exactly, but I am pretty sure you have to be given some length of maternity leave. My boss just says he has no plans to hire any women because of that.

while I was unemployed, that's where most of my face-to-face interviews came from and where I found my current job. There's a lot of job listings to weed through which are spam or have crap pay though. I usually only applied to the ones that either listed a company name that I could look up or had relatively detailed descriptions. Most of the more generic listings are probably just staffing agencies which is another option if you're really desperate.

I think 95% of the jobs I applied to over the last several years have been through craigslist. Monster, Career builder, linked-in, etc. seem to only have national listings (or stuff like truck driver school, military, etc). I found the occasional job to apply to through them, but most of it was junk.

That being said, there is a lot of junk on craigslist too (especially in the admin/office or part-time areas).

But in my field (construction), Craigslist was the place to look

Linkedin jobs are junk?? Maybe a little portion of it I think but most of them look real.

Maybe I should have separated linked-in from the others to better clarify. The jobs on linked-in are real, its just that I found very very few that were local and in my field. I found a bunch that were national listings if I was interested in moving to some big city. But I wasn't open to that. So I think I only had two interviews out of the dozens that I've been on over the years that came from linked-in

While it is breaking the law to deny someone pregnant a job, I am sure companies find a reason from their end like "Sorry we don't have the funding for this position and cannot hire you right now."

I have been offered two jobs that were posted on Craigslist, and both were some of the best jobs I have ever had. But I was sketched out at first too.

Keep putting out those resumes guys. I was starting to get discouraged after like 2 months of sending out 20 resumes a day without a response. I finally got a call and started a new job 2 weeks ago. Since starting my current job, I have gotten several calls from companies I applied to months ago. I know the waiting game sucks, but when it rains it pours.

I feel bad for the folks on here who cannot find jobs. I guess it is a skills match thing or maybe a location issue. I get contacted all the time by head hunters with some very lucrative openings. I am pretty happy with my current job so I always say thanks, but no thanks. I hope for the best for all of those looking...

Landed my first nursing job earlier this month. Between my recruiter having a family emergency, getting sent wrong paperwork (relocation instead of transfer), and having my start date pushed back 2 weeks due to unclear status on when to start orientation because of being a university employee transferring in vs. being a hospital employee, it's been...a headache?

I now start Oct. 7th. 2 weeks off to clean and packing in anticipation of moving in a month or so.

If any meteorologists are looking for a job, my old one just got posted. It's in Columbia, SC (only a 3 hour drive from the Triangle!) and it can certainly give you some practical forecasting experience in addition to air quality permit modeling. Apply and let me know so I can try and put a good word in!

I thought I had something lined up when I graduated in December but that fell through. Trying to find something in the Central NC area or I will have to go work for my dads company, which would be OK except that I would not be using my degree and it would be difficult to take in-person interviews for jobs while working for them. How much will it hurt me if I end up working for six months to a year out of my field when I am looking for work?

had a federal contract and then put in my notice after a month of shutdown (they don't pay contractors retroactively or anything) and took a job in NYC at NYU. Ended up having family health issues develop and thought it best to stay in NC so told them I was going to stay. been looking ever since.

anyone know anything in grants/contract management, federal compliance, program/project management let me know... been trying to get my foot in the door at AllScripts, Salix, INC Research, etc. but also applying to university positions, although I'd like to move into private sector.
