your experiences, best paint youve used, gun, etc...

probably painting my jeep over break, painted a few(small) things before so i know very little about a full paint job on a vehicle.

just lookin for your input/experiences

i helped a friend spray paint his wrangler a few years back

we also used plywood to cover the hole rusted in the floor

umm preping it would be nice.

best paint.... it depends. what kinda car you painting?

gun... it depends.. gravity feed vs bottom feed.. personal preferences..

clear coat...

sand and buff..

its not a one shot and im done job.

your best bet is to prep it and take it to maaco or peach

oh no, i dont mean for you all to give me the process i know the process, like i said ive done bumpers and hoods and such...this will be the first big job i've done though


whats your ideal paint brand, gun etc...

its going on my CJ5 so no need to be completely perfect

get a cheap ass cp gun, and a lot of 400 grit sandpaper

last truck I painted was with some cheap paint from loop road in garner. It was a single stage. Painted it on a hot day with a craftsman gravity feed gun and the suggested nozzle. It didn't flatten out very well, but two days of wet sanding and buffing and it looked great. Probably had a couple hundred in primer / paint /sand paper / supplies. Its a pain in the ass but doable

just lay on a half dozen coats of acrylic laquer loaded with hardener and then sand/buff the shit out of it

a good friend of mine that paints uses sata guns and sherwin williams paint, if that helps.

you can do a lot with sand paper and a high speed buffer if you get enough orange peeled product on there as the others have said

started the sanding process today

its gonna take awhile...need to head back to raleigh to pick up my auto sander...

all these dern nooks and crannies in a jeep make it a pain

Just scuff it with a red pad and mask the tough spots, then take it to the paint shop. No it wont be perfect but the fact is you cant afford a perfect paint job.




Take a look, I spent one day on the prep on this neon. That is replacing body panels, removing the cowl panel, filling chips with touch up primer, removing the 3rd brake lamp, etc. Then I scuffed with a red pad, washed it with simple green, wiped with mineral spirits, and rounded up some used tires. Then drove it to the paint shop.




Two days and $285 later, this was the result:





You cant buy the materials and do as good a job yourself. Period.

Like $1500 or something, had the car almost 10 days start to finish. But thats not the point!

reason being though, its more a project for me, ive done some work on it and wouldnt mind being able to say i did a good job.

i actually have mine lined up and now another buddy is willing to pay to have his done if it turns out good.


and luckily im getting the paint donated, friend works at NAPA and they had a bad mix color wise, turns out its about the color i was looking just gonna throw in some metallic.

so it'll be under $20 bucks, i already had a gun and plenty of primer.

we'll see how this goes, first step is finding a DA sander to borrow.

Satas are great but unless you paint a lot doubt you want to drop $300 to $500 just on the paint gun.

If he doesn't already have one, an in line pressure gauge is probably the best improvement for the money spent on getting the paint to spray nice. More expensive clear will be thicker and less likely to run, helps as well. My boyfriend uses PPG, definitely noticed a difference between spraying the omron and deltron clear.
