seriously, back when I was running a register I could get 3-4 people through in the time it takes for these people to get through 1

and don't blame the POS systems either, they're lightyears better and easier to use that when I was doing this back circa 1999-2002

SERIOUSLY. My RPMs were SOOOO high when I work at Food Lion those 6-7 years.

And wtf is wrong with cashiers not having any personality and/or good customer service skills now. It's like the past few times I've gone to AF Food Lion, it's always bored-looking quiet cashiers. Like, I have to ask them if there's anything on MVP and ASK them how they are doing. RIDICULOUS. Only a few chicks there and one male cashier are nice.

some people would prefer it if their cashier didn't talk to them

they get paid by the hour not by the customer, they dont give a damn maybe they get satisfaction from the wait.

I actually think thats part of the problem too, cashiers wanting to talk to people instead of getting them out of there

Oh and you move people through fast becasue you don't want to have to spend as much time dealing with customers and so you can stand around doing nothing or talking with the other people on the line, at least thats how we did it. the longer a customer is there the more time they have to complain about something

Pretty sure that I greet customers and that's about it, I will only talk to them more if they have something interesting to say.

Ok. Keep in mind I DID NOT mean have a full-out conversation. I mean, you can at least be cordial and say "Hey, how are you? Do you have an MVP card?" That's it. Then maybe a "Thank you." or "Have a good one." Geesh. Cashiers just don't give a fuck anymore.

Some of the girls at food lion on avent ferry are halfway nice so long as I start off the conversation, usually the black girls have something funny to say. There is also surprisingly one pretty good looking one there at least there was the last couple of times I went.

^^ Well, at my place of work, we are encouraged to converse with the customers for the duration of the transaction. I, personally, don't give two fucks beyond being cordial (unless you're a cute chick). I'm such a rebel.

yeah i had the highest RPMs out of anyone when i worked at lowes foods

i think the highest i ever got was somewhere around 60 - subsequently, i also got customers out the door faster than anyone

i was also friendly and personable, i talked to them while i was working... i even had customers write in just to say how nice i was...

so it's possible to be both.

I occasionally work as a cashier when people on front end are unavailable. I used to work only as a cashier, and honestly i couldn't care less about my customers. I would try to avoid conversation because 99% of people who try to talk to you are annoying, or think they are hilarious when in actually they just say the same things that everyone else who walks through your line says. I have no interest in making small talk with people i will only see for 45 seconds of my life. Just buy your shit, if you have any questions ask them. Don't ask me what school i go to, don't ask me how i feel about the weather, don't ask me shit, because you probably don't care anyways. If you have something interesting to say, or are just being nice then thats just fine, but don't force it.

I'm Big Business and i approved this message.

i blame the old guy in front of me dickering over whether the price of his apples is 1.15/lb or 1.25/lb. here, i'll give you the extra 17 cents if it really means that much to you. just let me pay for my manwich and cup-o-noodles and be on my way.

You talking about the really skinny light skinned girl with "good hair". She's really quiet but respectful and talks occasionally (at least she always speaks to me). She's really friendly. I know a few that are still there, as I was a cashier there for 1 year back in 2004-2005. Chandra is funnyyy. LOL
