I used to cary round just a generic swiss army knockoff and I found that neither the blade nor the tools were good enough so I want to get something here around the holidays while stuff is on sale
On the one hand I've never really seen a multitool where that was that great or that I felt the blade on could come anywhere close to a devent knife.
But I'm not sure I want to be limited to just a basic folding knife.
I don't hunt and don't plan on needing something hardcore for anything more than just general use so I was looking into the gerber gator or something from buck for just a simple knife or in the multitool range of things I've heard good things about the leatherman skeletool.
Only requirement is a low maintinence blade and a not anything crazy looking

my leatherman came with a knife that has a phillips head screwdriver, a flat head screwdriver, and a bottle opener on it. I carry that more often than the leatherman now, its awesome. It is a little bit wider than a normal knife to make room for the screwdrivers, but still fits comfortably in my pocket.

I carry a SOG multitool. It's kinda strange. Shiny gold finish, but the thing is FANTASTIC. I got it as a gift and it is the smoothest, well designed, reliable tool I've ever owned. I've got a couple of leathermans that don't compare to the refinement of this thing. It's got gear teeth where the pliers meet the handles, which is something I've never seen before.12/14/2008 2:17:30 AM |

Every multi tool is different. If you want a knife that happens to have a screwdriver, go for one of the stealth ones like the leatherman knife listed above.
If you need a small utility blade, as well as a few small other tools, look at a guppy or one of the other fusion multi tools. 12/14/2008 11:33:08 AM |

^ if you need it, carry it.
^^I agree. Leatherman all the way for multitools, bucks for a knife
I have two leathermans and one geber. the leathermans are by far superior. I also have a spring assisted buck, which I absolutely love. 12/14/2008 12:52:51 PM |

+1 for leatherman
i still have my original from...10 years ago? 12? and it's still going strong...i certainly don't use the knife aspect of it very much, but i use most of the other tools on it pretty regularly (i carry a CRKT, as well, and so i use that blade all the time) 12/14/2008 5:00:48 PM |

I've got a Leatherman PST II from when I worked at Apex Hardware in High School. I graduated in 98, so I've had it for at LEAST 10 years so probably closer to 12 and I can attest to it's versatility and durability. I've decided to retire it simply because I don't like hang things on my belt these days.
So, I replaced it with a Leatherman Skeletool for every day pocket carry:
It is pretty minimalist, not bulky at all, and good enough for 90% of the stuff you'll need it for. The only thing I wish it had was a pair of scissors.
I keep a Leatherman Wave for when I go out to the flightline and a Spyderco Endura when I need something with a little more heft. None of these replace a full tang knife when I go into the woods though.
If you're looking for something more elegant, take a look at a Victorinox Nomad:

^^Very interesting.
I have a Gerber multitool that was a gift from a friend. It's always served it's purpose, so I can't really complain. 12/15/2008 12:57:50 AM |

is the skeletool cx worth the ~$20 more than the regular skeletool? 12/31/2008 6:16:48 PM |

Probably not.
It has a serrated blade and a different steel. That's about it. Ask the steel experts if it matters. 12/31/2008 6:21:59 PM |

Speaking from the perspective of the military, far more often do you hear "Who has a Multi-tool?" than you hear "Who has a knife?" All things being equal, I'd go with a good multi-tool over a good knife any day of the week. 1/3/2009 9:54:31 PM |

I have a Leatherman Super 200 that I never use (found it at a concert and stuck it in my glove box) and then someone got me a Gerber with an $80 price tag for Christmas. Fortunately I think he'll be cool with letting me return it for cash or store credit.
I prefer a knife. If I need tools I go to the toolbox, truck, etc. Rarely have I needed something and not been able to make do.
