I was at Sam Ash the other day, looking at guitar cases, and there was a woman with two kids looking at guitars for her son. The daughter kept saying, "Mom, I want to be in a band!"

The mother turned to the girl and said, "Girls aren't supposed to be in bands, honey."

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I really wanted to turn to that little girl and tell her that girls can do whatever they want and then buy her a Breeders record or something similar...but I didn't because I felt that it wasn't my place.

Was I right to keep my thoughts to myself, or should I have made it clear to the girl that no matter what her mother thinks, she can do whatever she wants with her life?

that's a pretty shitty thing to say from a mother. But yeah, I'd shake my head and go about my business.

nah dude, best not to interfere with other parents rearing. If the girl wants to do it badly enough she will grow and find a way to do it anyways. The guy from necrophagist was given a guitar by his older brother but his parents destroyed it and made him eat stones instead of food or something. If she lets her mother control her then she probably isn't fit to play music anyways.

since you don't particularly know this lady or her famly... so you would basically be assuming all of her parenting on that phone phrase, i'd think that it would be out of line. honestly if i said something to my child and somebody came out of no where and underminded me directly to my child... i'd knock them the fuck out....

do you really want a child like that to be fatherless or motherless because the parent was in jail from assaulting a big mouth in a music store with a random music stand?

This is not a good rule. 90% of the people who screw up society probably could have used someone to tell their parents what to do.

Obviously you have to pick your battles, but it's not an absolute that you shouldn't tell people when tehy're doing something wrong.

Maybe she wanted to set up her child with a realistic future so her kid doesn't end up living in her basement until she is 35. Because we KNOW every kid who wants to be in a band makes it. I don't have any kids, but if I did and some know-it-all college kid tried interjecting into my parenting.... I would be livid.

"Girls shouldn't be in bands" is not "being realistic," especially when you're buying a guitar for your son.

If someone doesn't want their kids to play music, that's fine, but to suggest that music is a gender-specific pastime is ludicrous.

And I too have used Google Search to find a good angry potato. I was disappointed.

Who knows, maybe it's a religious thing. the point is, it's her kid and that is waaaaaaaaaaay out of line. Unless the parent is being obviously abusive or something, all it would turn into is an embarassing situation for all parties involved.

if said woman was in the parking lot being slapped to the ground, stood back up, and slapped back down repeatedly by her big scary husband

would you be so willing to walk up to them and provide your opinion?

I'm not being a troll but you should of said something.

You could of said it respectfully but clearly. Women can do whatever the fuck they want to do. Lots of kick ass girls rock hard.

...

Just try to internalize it for the future so you have a little bit more self confidence about expressing your values.
