Some of our family friends from out of the country is visiting raleigh this thursday.
they are kind of doing like a tour of america and have only 1 day in raleigh, so we can't go too far out.
So any ideas on cool places nearby/on campus to show them? Btw, they are in their mid-40s. 12/15/2008 3:06:17 PM |

what about the art museum? or downtown around the capital building and the history/science museums.
pullen park? moore square? city market and show them some of the little galleries and shop? i would say ride on the raleigh trolley but i don't think they do the tours in the winter, but they might. take them to like krispy kreme to get a doughnut haha. as far as NCSU stuff you could just show them a little of the campus if they are interested in seeing a university. you should show them the arboretum or something. 12/15/2008 3:31:24 PM |

Be sure to take them out to a BBQ place for lunch but make sure it's the good vinegar based Eastern NC stuff and not the other wannabe crap. 12/17/2008 7:36:13 AM |

The blue ridge parkway/smokey mountains are probably the only thing worth seeing in NC if you are from out of country. Maybe the outer banks. Everything else you can pretty much see anywhere else. 12/17/2008 9:00:48 AM |

Definitely hit up downtown and do City Market, Moore Square, the capitol building, history and/or science musuems, city museum, convention center, new buildings going up, etc. For good bbq downtown hit up Cooper's (the old favorite) or The Pit (the new heat). Take Blount street north out of downtown and check out the Governor's mansion and the historic houses on Blount, all that remains of what was once Raleigh's most fashionable street. This will, conveniently, put you one block away from Krispy Kreme when you reach the intersection with Peace street.
Outside of downtown, there is the art museum, Raulston Arboretum (though I don't know how good that would be in late December...)...campus of course...pullen park...not sure what else, really? If they like big old houses you could drive them around Oakwood or Hayes-Barton or Cameron Park...not sure what else, take them to a park or for a walk at Lake Johnson if it's a nice day? (which I don't think will be the case) 12/17/2008 10:17:33 AM |

go to Art Space where all of the artist studios are and just look at all the stuff.
then walk up the street to Coopers. 12/17/2008 12:08:36 PM |

^^ is that the little hut where you can see the trees on the walls? If so, that place is cool as hell. The whole outdoor trail is really cool, except for that dumbass vine thing they painted all over the green way itself. 12/17/2008 1:13:09 PM |

^ Keeping in mind it's >20 dollars an adult ticket for the sea scrolls, and the rest of the museum is free. Not worth it in my mind, and even with my discount. 12/18/2008 1:46:48 AM |
