do you mean your desktop icons are no longer on your desktop, or do you mean the icons have all turned into the default folder/doc icon?12/16/2008 3:24:38 PM |

^vista is not the problem
I'm not talking about shortcuts/exe's. office file icons, autocad, and adobe icons are the default icon.
for example, a word file's icon is the default icon. the shortcut to word icon is correct though
after some googling, it looks like I may have lost some installer files..... not sure how to get those back

yeh, all the associations seem fine/open in correct program. seems that the files have just lost their icons.
I fixed the program icons I could find.
However file icons for docx, xlslx, pub, pdf, csv, etc are still showing as the default icon 12/16/2008 3:52:48 PM |

you can try repairing your install. Go to add/remove programs, click change by 2k7 and then when the wizzard starts choose repair. 12/16/2008 4:20:19 PM |

ok, I'm trying to run the ms office diagnostics, but it keeps telling me that I don't have permission to access the event log.
I am the only user on the computer, and I only use the administrator account.
how can I get permission to access this (and possibly do away with all of this stupid fucking access shit) 12/18/2008 8:51:06 AM |

There used to be a TweakUI option to rebuild icons. But this was for XP and older. Might can find something for Vista?
I'm also going to assume you've restarted the computer to see if that fixes it? 12/18/2008 9:29:56 AM |

You may have to open the diagnostic tool with the "Run as Administrator" option. 12/18/2008 11:16:30 AM |
