Is the internet going down? Undersea sub-cables have just broken...
Quote : | "Breaking news: something's happening to the internet, right now. We're just not quite sure what.
Interoute, the internet networks company, reports that three of the four internet sub-cables that run from Asia to North America have been damaged.
These carry more than 75 per cent of traffic between the Middle East, Europe and America. It's hard to gather what this actually means - is it that the internet is down or (more likely) significantly slower than usual between the Middle East and America? (If you're reading this, let's face it, the internet has not shut down altogether)" |
Terrorism perhaps?

Let's see, Russian and Chinese ships are sailing around international waters, and suddenly this happens. Hmmm.... nah, probably just a coincidence.
Quote : | "I'm told that these major sub-sea cables break once a year. So companies have developed a fall-back plan. If one sub-sea cable is out, traffic is re-routed onto a second cable. In theory, a dual break, where both cables go out at once, is incredibly rare. Prior to January this year, it had not happened before." |
Much more likely anyway.

Always possible that a sub, whether one of ours or one of theirs, hit the cable.
Also possible that us, the Chinese, the Russians, the French, or any number of nations with submarines and the capability to tap lines might have botched an attempt to tag the Internet.
Sure, a terrorist might have done it, but their resources would be better spent for more traditional, sensational explosions and such. 12/19/2008 10:18:30 PM |

IT guys without bachelor's degrees are nothing more than a guy that calls support lines all day to find out how to do his job. In the end, he doesn't do a damn thing. I dealt with that constantly at my last job. 12/22/2008 12:43:34 PM |

I've been on subs for a long time now, and this is highly unlikely. First of all, I am assuming the cables are buried, or at least near the ocean bottom, and subs rarely if ever operate near the floor if they can help it. Plus, they would be charted and marked as a "steer clear" area. Secondly, I cannot imagine what would be the benefit of tapping into/sabotaging the internet for any country, and I really doubt the capability to do so exists. Once a sub is underwater, it doesn't open any penetrations from the pressure hull to the sea. There are a few with little "mini-subs" that can be deployed, but those are for SEAL transport, and I don't think they have that sort of capability either.12/30/2008 11:28:21 PM |
