my Dell Inspiron E1405 has just burned through its second AC adapter in 2 months. Is there a problem with my computer, or do I just have bad luck? 12/23/2008 8:03:18 AM |

what were the circumstances when the adapters were "burned through" 12/23/2008 9:49:52 AM |

Assuming that these are Dell power adapters and not cheap chinese made replacements, I'd say the electrcity in your house is more likely to kill them than anything your laptop is doing. 12/23/2008 11:47:23 AM |

but that doesnt make sense since the power adapters are designed to take anything from 100-240 VAC and 50-60 Hz 12/23/2008 11:50:11 AM |

it could be the fact that it's not grounded properly or over-amp'd, ever heard the saying, volts don't kill people, amps do.

These are the chargers. I ordered them both from dell.com. And what I mean is that one minute, the adapter is working, and then all of a sudden, it quits. They won't charge anymore and the little green light won't come on. I cut the computer off and unplugged the charger overnight figuring it might have just overheated, but it looks like it's totally dead.

Its blowing fuses in the power adapter for some reason I'm guessing? Take it apart and replace the fuse since it's busted already. Or go for dell warranty replacement if you can. 12/23/2008 1:20:54 PM |

Since it stopped working; have you tried using it in another electrical outlet at home, have you tried using it somewhere else? 12/23/2008 1:43:53 PM |

do you plug them into a surge strip? 12/24/2008 10:49:37 AM |

there's a small chip in the power supply responsible for regulating the wattage making it to your laptop. in dell's chargers, these are notorious for getting fried. this can happen due to power surges, outages, or anything else resulting in a sudden change in the power entering the charger. the best solution is to buy a battery backup or APC and plug the charger into that. this way, you will have a buffer between your charger and the power companies, and you will have a constant flow of electricity (no more chips frying).
I had the same problem. sux.
hope you had a good christmas! 12/25/2008 5:07:12 PM |

I believe your problem may be due to not having any pictures of yourself in your TWW gallery. Please upload pictures of yourself then try again.

the problem might be the contact on your computer that the plug goes into, ive had that thing come loose on my toshiba so many times i have to turn it in every few months to my company for repair 12/25/2008 8:35:35 PM |

^typically not the problem with the dells. more often than not, this problem leads to the motherboard getting fried. dell will usually limp you along until your warranty dies, then tell you that a new motherboard will run you $texas.
better off buying the APC.

I've gotten 3 new sound cards (keep stepping on the audio cables when they're plugged in), 2 new power adapters, 2 HDDs, and a new mobo all covered by my warranty. I love dell support. The same support guy in the area contracts out to dell so he knows my house now and he always comes the day after i chat online with dell and replaces the parts.12/25/2008 8:50:05 PM |

my point was that she should be able to plug this thing into any conceivable outlet in her house and it should work just fine and thus there shouldnt be a problem with the power in her house causing the issue12/25/2008 8:55:27 PM |
