I want a small, extremely portable, yet durable external HDD.

I bought a 320gb WD Passport last week and it kicked the bucket after literally 1 day of use. HDD failure.

Seagate FreeAgent Go (the 2.5" new version) + 5-year warranty
http://tinyurl.com/9egblp

like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148341

or just build it yourself. 2.5" enclosures are like $10 + cost of 2.5" hard drive and it's like 4 screws

True..maybe i'll just replace the drive that was in the Passport.

I guess I just got a bad drive because I've always heard that WD was reliable...

I've had good luck with WD Passports...I have a 250GB that I've been using off and on for a year or two and its never given me any problems...sounds like you might've just gotten a lemon

1st two choices:
Western Digital
Seagate

I also have a Calvary 1Tb that I'm fond of. It's obviously not portable but they make 2.5" drives. They use Seagate, Western Digital (WD), Maxtor, Samsung, and Toshiba drives

I need to buy another one for storing photos and videos, it will not get much use. Any thoughts on this one? I need to go to best buy b/c of a gift card...

^ i hate plastic enclosures as a general rule, but i'm pretty sure the WD my books have a pretty solid track record

you can definitely get a 500gb cheaper online...by about $20...so unless your gift card is $20+, i'd get it online and spend the money on something else at best buy

my $0.02

I just got this one

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=206821006

1TB for 100 bucks

might end up being a piece, but for 10 cents per gig, its a risk I'm willing to take

^^ shoot, you can get the "green" version for $80 AR: http://www.onsale.com/shop/detail~dpno~7532251.aspx

for external, the green is plenty fast (i have 2 of them and love them)

^ oh, in that case, just stick with the WD

I already have an HDD but i have a question about using it.

I really only have the HDD to store my music on. Not really using it for backup or anything else. That being said, should install the manager software stored on the drive or should i just use it like a plug and play mass storage device?

I guess i'm wondering, because right now I have the software installed and it seems like the HDD is always spinning even though I'm doing nothing remotely associated with music or the files stored on the drive.
