I'm sure there are some people in here who know a hell of a lot more about these things than I do. I'm looking for a jacket that will keep me warm and dry while hiking (windchill will be close to zero), windproof, and has zippable layers so that it can transform into a warm jacket for the cooler fall months or even keep me dry in the summer. I like every north face product i've ever worn so I'd like to go with one of those but i'm open.

SHOP WITH ME

Oh yeah, I checked one out at REI today that was like 289. It was nice but i'd like to spend less if possible.

I think that you may be overdoing it. Hiking with windchill close to zero doesn't warrant a $200 jacket. I mean, if you have the money and want it go for it, but you are not camping for an extended period where there will be snow on the ground. I think that a thrift shop or Goodwill is a nice place to start looking for stuff like this.

Well i'm looking for a jacket to last me a while and in the future I do see hiking in colder/snowier weather situations. I am looking at their cheaper ~100 dollar jackets that are listed more as a windbreaker though... I think that might serve my purposes.

Or if it is something last minute, you could layer up on sweaters or fleeces and see how that goes. Also, wind is a huge factor that you have to consider as well. Hiking under tree cover is a lot less painful than on a cold windy plain. Still is lots of fun.

I got a gift card to Kohl's cause I wanted new shoes. They don't have size 15 though (Ladies, PM me).

I bought two nice jackets there, "Zero Expedition". I live in Denver and it's been below zero this year - the Kohl's coat has kept me warm.

Yeah my thought with buying a wind jacket was going to be wear layers. The only trouble is I don't really have a ton of warm clothing

That's what I get for living in a warm climate.

Don't buy the Northface Apex if you're looking for something really warm and/or waterproof. I have an Apex jacket I got two years ago and it's neither warm or waterproof.

The more I look at it the more I like this one http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2989358

I figure it's three jackets in one so it lowers the price per jacket

REI's garage sale is today and/or tomorrow, you can probably find that $300 jacket for under $100, if you're a member.

Find one of these great but pricey jackets at Outdoor provision co in Cameron Villa or on eBay. They keep you seriously warm, dry and cozy.

^cloudveil makes some GREAT jackets. i have the RPK, it's far and away better than any northface. if you can get one on sale, I'd reccomend it.

marmot jacket's are on clearance sale at REI, it's green - which is a shitty color, but it's $100 (retail at $250+). which is worth it for a nice jacket.

insulating liner jacket? Why spend extra for a jacket with this ridiculous feature. simply buy a cheaper jacket and wear a fleece that you already own underneath! congratulations you just saved $100

any of these http://www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/group/100000246/Mens-3-in-1-Jackets.html

but i like this one http://www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/SEC0119/Section-Division-Component-Jacket-Mens.html

as far as those northface jackets up there check up on the waterproof rating and breathability. you want some thing at least 10,000k and 10,000g. also read a lot of reviews.

I ended up getting the 3-1 deal, got it for like 180 after some discount I wasn't aware of and a coupon I printed off the internet. I figure by the time I bought a decent windproof/water resistant shell and a fleece liner I would have spent about the same. I'm happy with my purchase, this jacket fits really well. Probably the first jacket i've ever bought that didn't have sleeve length problems

I'm new to the world of underarm vents. This jacket just blew my mind.

Also, I saw a SWEET go to hell leather vest at the pawn store today. I almost bought it for the lulz.

^I was at a party, and I saw a guy with a leather jacket, and I thought, 'That's cool'. Then I saw a guy with a leather vest and I thought, 'That's not cool'. It was then that I realized what coolness is all about... leather sleeves.

"underarm vents"

lol ... me and TheBullDoza had a long running discussion/argument on this topic, which I was eventually declared the winner of. My thinking is that pit zips accomplish nothing but upping the price and weight of your jacket. I asked TheBullDoza why unzipping the front of the jacket would not keep you cool enough. If you're too hot with you jacket unzipped, you take it off. He was unable to come up with a situation where pit zips were actually useful. maybe you will though

My defense is that I didn't buy the jacket because of the pit-zips.. therefore it's just and added feature and the extra zipper is more for my money. Maybe it can act as a backup zipper if the front zipper fails and I need to do some emegerency mid-trail surgery..

nobody loves adding zippers like North Face. seriously there's gotta be some kind of company policy that each jacket has at least 9 zippers

underarm vents are good for regulating humidity in the jacket. if it is cold but you are working hard having underarm vents allow you to stay dry in the jacket without losing a lot of heat by unzipping the front.

this jacket is actually pretty conservative. front zip, one napoleon, pit zips, hood zip. that's about it. no 300 unnecessary pockets.

ah yes - too warm to unzip the front and too cold to be all the way zipped. I'm not convinced that this magic temperature even exists. I've heard that people do use them for skiing but I can't comment on that, so maybe that's the reason

have you ever worked up a sweat even though its freezing cold outside? its not a magical temp, its pretty easy to create a need for underarm vents.

if you take a layer off you get cold

i guess you could constantly keep taking off and putting on layers if you really wanted, but for thi=ose of us who have no unfounded aversion to underarm vents, we stay comfortable without the need to constantly take off and put on layers

if it's not a windblocking jacket, then they are useless.

but on a windblocking jacket they're freaking mandatory while skiing multimile mogul runs. I can't take off my jacket, because where the fuck am I going to put it?

Therefore, when I get hot, I open up the various vents on my jacket or ski pants.

you silly haters. just because you don't partake in activities that certain features were designed for does not make them useless.

^I can see that being useful for me tomorrow. They're calling for 20-30 mph winds all day so i'll be damned if i'm going to take my windbreaker off. Gotta get that moisture out of my jacket somehow.
