I don't know how I feel about this action. I def breastfed Maya for a while but I was very private about it. I do think it is a beautiful thing but at the same time I believe it is very private. I don't really understand why women would want to put up pictures of such a precious and private moment.

One theory that came to mind (and I will prob get a lot of heat for this) was the fact that some women struggle with feeling beautiful and then they have these big breast for the first time so they want to capture it in pictures and then post it for the whole world to see.

Another thing is that maybe they want to capture this precious moment just in case they forget it later.

I don't know what goes through their head but I would never take pictures of me breastfeeding.

The issue comes about because in today's time, breasts have become sexual objects. In previous times, breasts were not considered that sexual (or at least not nearly as much as today), but were rather seen as what fed your newborn child -- women breastfed in public for hundreds of years without too much trouble until recently.

my experience around women breastfeading has been that women women who are on their first child are more sentimental and breastfeading is a private and very personal thing whereas women with more children tend to be more practical and it is just feeding the kid, nothing more. If it is just feeding the kid, then it's no different than putting a bottle in their mouth. I've never heard of anyone having a problem with a picture of a baby sucking on a bottle.

Actually, the Puritans allowed open breastfeeding in the middle of church services, and nobody saw any problem with it at all. This was the case almost universally until the mid-20th century, when folks started having a problem with it.

Well, the most famous work of Puritan artwork is Paradise Lost, which shows both male and female nudity, so no, they didn't necessarily have an issue with it. The Puritans are probably the most misunderstood group in American history because of one foolish book (The Scarlet Letter).

The term 'puritanical' gets its modern usage from the profound universal misunderstanding of them, I believe mostly inspired by The Scarlet Letter and other such literature. To most, puritanism can simply be defined as "the paranoid fear that someone somewhere may be happy," when, in fact, the puritans (evidenced from their own writings and histories) were people of great joy and happiness. Sex was indulged in and loved as a good gift of God, and not despised or repressed. They did, however, insist that the God-given appetite for the gift of sex should be expressed only in marriage - but inside marriage, everyone was encouraged to express that part of themselves fully, with no inhibition whatsoever.

I think you misunderstood my comment about the mid-20th century. Before that time is when it was universally acceptable to breastfeed in public, including in the middle of Puritan church services with the entire breast exposed.

Only in the latter half of the 20th Century was there any sentiment beginning against it. The folks before that time weren't nearly as squeamish about feeding babies as we are now. It was a fact of life. The censorship started, ironically to some, as society shifted away from 'puritanism.'
