Snorkeling(or diving if you're a diver) in Hanauma Bay. It'll cost you ~$15 to rent the snorkel gear, and $5 entrance fee. Get there early, they only let a certain number of people in, because it is a wildlife preserve.

Also, you can play "spot the Hooker" on any given night in Waikiki.

So you're staying in Honolulu? That means you're not planning on the relaxing Hawaiian vacation? Are you willing to Island Hop? You definitely need to go to the Hawaii island. When I went we stayed in Kona and it was great. It wasn't crowded at all, barely anyone on the beaches. Great hikes through to rainforests and great volcanoe views.

I definitely recommend the rainforest hikes, even if they're just on Oahu (and they're free). Also, hike up Diamond Head, but do it early in the morning too, because it get's really hot, and it's pretty much all stairs. Bring water with you. When I went, they had to air-evac someone out of there.

You can also get out of Honolulu, and just park along pretty much the side of any road and go to the beach. The further from Honolulu you get, the less crowded. There are plenty of beaches along the North side that will be relatively empty.

If you want to do a luau kind of thing, or a night show, try the Polynesian Cultural Center. It's pretty neat, and it can be as expensive or inexpensive as you want.

they do free movies on an outdoor screen in Waikiki most weekends.

go to the mai tai bar on top of the mall --- lots of drink and food specials, live music, and hot bartenders

go walk up diamond head and do the stairway to heaven

get one of the high priced hookers wearing the clear slippers around 6 am. That's when they lower their rates dramatically.

go to sandy's beach and watch people hurt themselves in the waves

and dont piss off any mokes.

Definitely do a luau. And you have to eat the pig they cook under ground with rocks. But be prepared for about 20 thousand congrats given out at the luau for newlyweds and 50th anniversary couples.

I'm working on a limited budget and the Hale Koa is the hotel I can get the best price.

it's Hawaii. There's plenty to do. We stayed at Halekulani when I went, and they arranged tons for us to do. As long as you're not staying at the Comfort Inn or something, your hotel can almost always hook you up.

definetly diamond head - and its free except for a cab or ride over there

do this early, in case you want to do it again to watch the sunrise/sunset....and make sure you bring water, and a flashlight if you got it (you'll see why). Of course you can do it without the water, but you want to enjoy yourself and not suffer.....ahh i wish i was back in oahu, I loved that place.

pearl harbor
univ of hawaii tour (since you'll fall in love with the place before you leave - grad school!)

Hawaii seems like it would be a waste of time to do on the cheap. If you're going to go to the trouble to get out there, do it right. Otherwise you could just go to Puerto Rico and save yourself a lot of time and money.

Should be snow this time of year at the top of the mtn peaks.

I was there 6 months ago but was on Maui. Lots of hotels are having sweet deals now b/c of the economy. Things like buy 2 nights get 3rd night free.

I suggest snorkling every day, try surfing its pretty sweet, sea kayaking...is it the season for whale watching yet? I know it is in the winter time but I dunno if its too early. Take a helicoptor tour of the island. Horseback riding on at one of the ranches is pretty sweet.

I heard Oahu is fairly developed, as almost 1 million ppl live there. Go to another island!

I live there.... and would say if you're gonna be there for 9-10 days here's what you want to do:

Day 1: Pearl Harbor (cheap... maybe free) You'll have to get there early but that won't be a big deal b/c you'll be jetlagged out to hell and waking up at 3 or 4 am

Day 2: Hanauma Bay prolly the cheapest tourist snorkling spot on the island but it gets crowded fast so get there early for the same reason. Don't go on a weekend.

Day 3: diamond head, koko head, and the east side drive down past waimanalo beach. (take H1 East till it ends and just keep going.) You'll end up near Kaneohe/Kailua and then go south to get back on the Pali. It's a great drive and it's really only like $35-40 (+gas) to rent a car. Totally worth it. And you can stop by the sea life park if you want.

Day 4: Go to the dole Pineapple cannery up on the north shore. Don't remember how much it costs but it's not bad. Same deal with the car rental. and once again the drive is totally worth it.

Day 5: Honolulu Zoo& Aquarium. Not expensive, you can walk to the aquarium from Waikiki. and take THE BUS to the zoo.

Day 6-10: Lay on the beach and chill out, or look for good hiking places and do them. http://www.backyardoahu.com/ Kaena point is on the western most tip of Oahu and is really easy (more of the walk than a hike) but it's really pretty. Stairway to heaven is closed. (although not heavily guarded if you really want to do it)

In general there's a TON of touresty stuff to do in Waikiki (honolulu) but it'll be expensive. But it's fun, so you get what you pay for. Parking will be EXPENSIVE ($15-30 a day) so include that to the price of the renal car. If you want you can use THE BUS. (that's what it's called) I've never used it. But it's cheap and it'll get you around the island (it just takes awhile) and it may/may not take you up to the north shore. There's a really nice sunset booze cruse out of waikiki. I think it's done by the Ala Moana Surfrider hotel, it's like $40 all you can drink for a 2-3 hours, totally worth it in Waikiki.

PM me for questions

Just make sure any females you go with make sure they get sunscreen on their butt. When I went we all neglected to do that and the rest of the time we were there we hated to sit down.

Yea so if you're going to hike the western point park on the north shore side. If you chose to park on the southern entrance to the hike, leave your doors unlocked and valuables at home as your car will be rummaged through by the homeless/waisted youth (they will break windows if doors are locked).

Diamond head hike is pretty sweet if you want an easy hike.
Manoa Falls is easy (its the valley right behind waikiki where the university is). Right before you get to the falls there are a bunch of rocks that look like they have a shitty trail that starts through them, its another pretty sweet trail that goes up to the paloli (sp?) flats and that goes to a pretty sick over look.
The Kaluanui hike in Hawaii Kai is awesome. Thats over near Haunama bay. Just make a left on keahole st (coming from Honolulu) and then a left on Kaluanui and park at the end of the street, the trail head is obvious. Its a nice overlook.
The guard gets to Stairway to heaven between 6 and 7 am... if you beat him there it is worth it.
At the top of Palolo valley is the palolo valley hike that goes up to the ka'au crater, which is awesome. Make a left on 10th street into the valley, at the fork go right on waiomao rd and park at the end... the trail starts behind the fence marked with a "no trespassing sign." go around the fence.

Northshore for a day is always worth it.
There is a rock to jump off up there at waimea bay (though if waves are high you will die.)
Sunset beach is beautiful.
Haleiwa is awesome and has some cool shops. Get the shaved ice at Matsumoto's.

Kayak around Kailua is pretty sweet. There is an island right off the beach park thats a fun destination. If not, to the right there are 2 islands the one on the left has an easy beach landing and is pretty fun.

If you do not go to Hanauma Bay to snorkel you have wasted a trip. They are closed on Tuesdays and the 23 or 22 bus (direct to Hanauma) does not run.
