My friend wants to take 20 credits. He'll be graduating this spring if he finishes these 20 credits. However, this exceeds the max. hours allowed. He has to obtain a course load waiver form from Dr. Knopp (his advisor). Is there a chance that Dr. Knopp won't sign this waiver form?

Well, if you just shake the paper in his face and say "Sign this!" You might have a low chance.

But if you outline why you need it signed in a rational and mature manner, then he'll probably sign it.

Your "friend" needs to go and speak with Dr. Knopp. If your "friend" has demonstrated an ability to do well with a large course load in past semesters then it shouldn't be an issue. /thread

I don't know why it's such a big deal to ask a question like this. YOu guys really don't need to quote the word "friend". Of course the best solution is to ask Dr. Knopp, that's a no brainer. Just wanted to ask to see what to expect.

I was told it was a recommendation based on GPA. However if it's denied you can take it to the department head then to the college head. I had to go to the department head to get 21 hours over the summer.

I took 20 credit hours one semester and had to do the whole course load waiver thing. There isn't any reason they shouldn't sign it unless you've just been taking 12 credit hours every semester and not been doing too well in them. they put a waiver in place to make sure a student doesn't take on more than they can handle. if you have successfully completed semesters of 17 or 18 hours before, you shouldn't have a problem.

Like previous posters mentioned, its all about your GPA. I've done this 3 or 4 times and all they ever did was check to make sure my GPA hadn't gone to shit. I say if your friend has > 3.0 then they shouldn't have any problem and if they do just go over the advisor's head. They do make you write down what courses you want to take; so, there may be an issue if they're in a tough department and are trying to take a lot of major courses. But, if you're in a tough major, like ECE or BME, hopefully you have enough smarts not to try and take 7 major courses at the same time.
