I've always had big dogs. I cant really do the purse size dog

All my pets have also been either free to good home, or some sort of adoption. I'm not paying $3k for a pure breed when there's plenty of awesome muts

^^^^Komondors are very territorial and hard to manage though.

If you have pre-existing pets I'd recommend a puppy just for ease of introduction. A mutt really is best, but still might retain breed characteristics, so do your research.

why does he have to GET you a dog?

It should be a dog that you two get together.
It's going to be a family member.

go get me a family member!!1

Bulldogs are extremely expensive and have a lot of health concerns.

If you have a cat I REALLY recommend a puppy. We had two rescue dogs before we got our puppy and neither rescue would get along with the cat, the second actually mauled Hobie.

Like I said, I'm not a fan of small dogs, but these are too freakin cute!
http://www.legacy-kennels.com/photo_gallery_of_pugs_.htm

I'm not talking big like great dane size... but like labrador, golden retriever, rottweiler, german shepherd size

I stare at enough pictures of cute animals for him to know what I would squeal at. I could care less what breed of dog, I just want a dog!

I would really really really really love to get a puppy! But we're not home enough right now to get it house broken. So that's why I figured 6 months - 1 year old.

I "bought" my cat by basically making a donation. It was a set donation fee for adoption.

I dont plan to buy from a breeder, dont worry.

How can anyone recommend a particular breed of dog without knowing your wants/needs?

A busy person who lives in an apartment does not need the same kind of dog that an active person in a house with a yard could manage.

I was merely looking for suggestions.

2 people that work 32-40 hours a week, mostly days.

Big back yard, plan on fencing it in at some point.

I like big dogs.

This thread was more so a *hint hint* at BEU

Only dog ever to seriously injure me was a bulldog, but it was the owner's fault. He needed to get some energy out but the parent's didn't pay for any time out of the kennel. We were packed so little extra time to let them out anyways. Guy escaped during medication, I tried to put hm back in and he came for me.

Only scary thing is he didn't stop until someone grabbed him off of me. Yeah I'll admit, I'm still nervous around em.

Stubborn, strong-willed. Need strong leader

I'd say a retired greyhound then. They're big but don't require much exercise. If you're both gone eight+ hours a day that's really not fair to the dog...

[Edited on January 5, 2009 at 10:39 PM. Reason : but a fenced yard is a MUST for them, they'll run]

A lot of retired greyhounds are off the track and will need exercise, or have risk of escaping if left out of sight in the backyard for too long.

A lot of them have anxiety issues too.

I worked with a greyhound rescue lady and let me tell you......................

^^Truth. I had a friend in high school whose family adopted retired greyhounds. All but one of those dogs had some serious issues.

I still vote for:

God. Not a golden...EVERYONE gets a retriever. If you rescue chances are it'll be a mutt anyway. Remember you can't just get it, stick it in the house and then leave for work and expect it to be fine though.

Not with any dog! Not til they're old and too tired to run like crazy anyways.

I'm sucker for goldens and not cause they're popular. The ones I met had the best demeanor, so smart, lots of tricks they can learn, so pretty, they seem to have a different kind of "connection" with humans too!

Need exercise and will shed like a mofo though.

I planned on taking some time off around my birthday-- so that would be the perfect time to let it get used to the house

[quote]I'd love to see a boxer in a small apartment, hah![quote]
I'll do you one worse... I've seen a boxer AND pug both stuck in a kennel, in a small apartment. Literally lived in their own feces, and when they did get let out, they were so freaking excited that they just shit everywhere on their way out to the porch. Which they then shit on the screened in porch... Pretty sad.

MORE CUTE PUPPY PICTURES!

Every shiba puppy I work with had a timeline. If they were in the store for too long they would start growling at customers trying to dominate. Every single one would need a strict talking to.

This is actually Lutra, remember I used to live over there? Anywho, we had lots of rescue shibas where I lived and yes they were awesome, because the Japanese generally treat their dogs like dogs, rarely kept inside I noticed. Anywho, after that I worked around a lot of shibas and all the ones I dealt with had major dominance problems and were very unpredictable, would definitely bite you if they felt like it. Have you seen the one on Cesar? They were like that. Basically turned into horrid little yappy dogs by Americans.

Haha, perhaps. We seriously looked at them before we got our puppy, but the husband wanted a larger dog.

Boxers are great dogs, but you have to be very careful about breeding. They are prone to a lot of genetic problems like bloat and cancer. Most boxers actually die of cancer rather than old age.

Ya, please don't clip the ears,

Our boxers had this obsession of sitting right in your lap though they weigh a shitton.

Their jiggly hips when excited are freaking adorable though
