first the xmas dinner ($5000) became xmas luncheon ($650) which was understandable. There were no xmas bonuses ($200 each) which was also understandable.

now they've quit providing the hot chocolate and tea for us in the breakroom and are also no longer providing us with lunch (subs) during our quarterly reviews. They've canceled our newspaper subscription as well.

with all of these cutbacks i'm thinking employees will be next.

my company executive committee gave us all a sob story about our low raises and bonuses (even though they were about what they normally give us every year)....yet gave the new boss $30,000 to buy a new car

Haha...they can't take our perks away where I work!

Oh wait, that's because there were none in the first place.

(In all serious the benefits here are pretty nice...but we don't get shit like bonuses, free drinks, etc)

That's pretty bad, sounds like the axe is about to swing for the bottom 10% of personnel. If I were you, I'd work harder and be more visible.

in the engineering department we only have 5 people and one was a girl who just left due to pregnancy. if she doesn't come back i'm hoping that her position will be the one the count as being axed.

In the works to get a pay cut... when my pay already isn't exactly the most livable situation... hence my decision to go back to further my education even more... while getting paid as a State employee...

at our christmas dinner the GM made a speech on how the economy was bad and that we were gonna try to get through it, etc etc etc

right after he said that a coworker told me that pretty much meant not to expect a raise or bonus

We have a vending company come in and supply us with coffee, creamer, sugar, etc

As long as we use their services, we can use their commercial coffee machine free

But if we bought the coffee and sugar at Sam's Club, we would save $150/month. And that would cover the cost of having to buy our own coffee maker. We can get the exact same make and model at Office Max for $399. It would pay for itself w/in 3 months

^we do the same thing. They just started to figure out that if we bought our own creamer and stuff, we'd save money.

The coffee machine was bought in the beginning, but they're saving lots o money on the creamers.

duke had a expensive, nice, off-site, catered xmas party with open bar my first winter here.
the second had a partially catered pot-luck style lunch/dinner in a newly opened office space.
the third consisted of 3 2-liters of soda, oreos, mixed nuts, trailmix, and some left over candy over the course of 3 days....

SAS doesn't have cutbacks, they just pay their people 20% less out of the gate.

we don't even pay monthly... 100% as in 100% of the premiums are covered.

plus we have an awesome on-site health care center.

there have been talks about them starting to charge us a little for it each month but i haven't heard anything else about that...

I dunno man, what do you think is competitive? I know a software developer and a sales guy that work there, and neither are pulling in that much.

it depends on the job... sales guys are almost completely commission based so that's not an accurate one to compare... but most of the software developers i know are pulling in six figures

My medical is completely covered, but I pay for dental. In retrospect, I'll dice the dental plan and just increase my flexable spending account desposits for any dental work. I've got the same healthcare benefits as a firefighter.

haha, you are talking about a senior software developer, I'm talking about a lowly entry level dev.

^^

I'm not a FF, I work for a software company that provides software solutions to Fire and EMS Agences. We get paid by local and state government agences and get some of the same contractual benefits as ffs.

Actually, I used to work for Allscripts, and I know that SAS uses that medical records system. I work for ETI, so we work with CAD systems like OSSI and Tritech.

^ Lower than what I make for sure. I mean I guess they could be lying to me about their salaries, but what would be the motive? lol
