In the Boone area? Sugar. All the times I went to Beech it was extremely windy and icy. The one nice thing they have is the high-speed quad lift. The other resorts are a joke comparatively.

I just came back from boarding at Snowshoe all this week, and realized how out of shape I am

Anybody have any thoughts on Flow bindings? I'd like to upgrade my current bindings as I'm afraid that with my luck they'll break soon.

There isn't anywhere in NC worth wasting your time/money on, unless you already live around Boone/Asheville and use a student rate during the week. And even that's pushing it.

Snowshoe and Wintergreen are the only places relatively nearby worth anyone's time.

^^ I do a lot of rear squats, front squats, deadlifts, and leg extensions/curls...not specifically for skiing, but I do seem to step it up a little bit during ski season. I figure that also will help strengthen and stabilize my knees. While they've never been problematic, I don't want to go down that road.

i've used a set for probably 6 winters. i like em. i got them simply b/c my buddy i went to the mtns with all the time had some step ins and i got tired of having to sit down and fuck with the ratcheting straps all the time. now i don't do crazy jumps and backflips and shit either, but for my purposes they're great. just make sure you take your boots with you to the store - some boots seem like they don't fit right in the single strap.

Which model do you have? I'm asking on the off-chance that they've kept the same models and still somewhat similar to the new ones

pretty much just typical NC stuff. a lot of icy patches, especially as you got closer toward the bottom of the blue runs that transitioned into greens. it wasn't terrible but i felt like the snow was better at wintergreen 2 weeks ago. i had a great time either way, definitely worth the money.

i was at beech and the conditions were great compared to previous NC trips. No ice, no patches, etc. They were making snow the entire time we were there.

Just came back from Whitetail in Pennsylvania. Conditions were awesome! Best I've seen in years. lots of fresh powder and no ice. It also started to snow a bit towards the evening until about 10pm when the slopes closed.

Don't give me that crap. I'm going with 10 people up to Snowshoe for a weekend and we're taking a 1/2 day on Friday and that's it. If you can't get away from work for 1/2 a day on a Friday then you have some problems.

i guess those would be the closest, i dunno. i mean these things are probably like 8 years old, i just took a couple year hiatus during school when the weather was warm each winter and i didn't have expendable income to go boarding. they were definitely the entry level model though, got em for like 50% off during the summer one year cause they were the previous season's model.

anyone ever been to utah? i'm heading out next week and can't decide which park to go to... i was leaning towards Deer Valley since i ski, but just wanted a second opinion. i think the other day my friend can get us into brighton for free, so i'll be doing that

I've been several times, I prefer the ski areas by SLC to park city, but many would disagree.

My favorite place up there is Solitude.

Brighton, Alta, Snowbird are also fantastic. My wife did not like Alta, but that's because she had to be carried off the mountain on a ski patrol sled. My buddy Brian did not like Solitude for the same reason.

really, you can't go wrong unless you go with me. Then you will probably get hurt.

^^^^ never been to deer valley, but it's a country club from what i've heard. dress codes, skiing hard frowned upon, almost all groomers. kinda boring, from what it sounds like.

^ I second the Canyons (although I've yet to try Alta--it sounds like a place I'd enjoy)

I was there last week. Wasn't much of any snowfall, and a few slopes, and one lift, were closed. They were making snow 24/7, though. Conditions got progressively better throughout the week, and they had a good amount of snowfall as we were leaving. I believe its stayed pretty cold up there, so confiditons should be pretty good.

Yeah, sometime in April.

Just an FYI for anyone looking for cheap Utah skiing. I went to Beaver Mountain up in the northeast corner of Utah (near Garden City, UT) -- all day lift ticket is $38. $38! AMAZING snow, I went all week and never got bored with the trail selection.

It's a ~2.5hr. drive from SLC, but a gorgeous drive that I'd encourage anyone to take. Also, from Garden City it's only ~3 hours to Jackson & the best snowmobiling in the world.

made our SB reservations for Breckenridge yesterday, looking forward to it. Hotel and Flight for ~ $390 a person

Whats the best way to get from DIA to Breckenridge? Shuttles look to be about ~$600 roundtrip for 4 ppl, and a rental car is kinda out of the question since we are all <25.

Anyone else headed out that way?

that's a ripoff, you can find it for much cheaper. should be no more than around $80 per person round trip.

a rental car is the best way to go, but if you're under 25, like you said, you're kinda out of luck.

first google hit:
http://www.summitcolorado.com/transportation-travel/dia-shuttle-services/
Quote :
"24/7 Service anywhere in Summit County to and from Denver International Airport (DIA)!
Door to Door service, 'On-Demand' welcome with 24 hour advance notice, pets/bikes welcome (extra charges apply).
Standard charge: $49/one-way, $89/round-trip. Get 10% off standard price when you mention SummitColorado.com!"

i'm sure if you poke around some more, you can find an even better deal.

Went to Sugar last weekend. Maybe it was because of the nice weather, but the lift lines were ridiculous during the mid-day session. 30+ minute waits every time just to get on the lift. Tack on a 10 minute ride to the top and each 1/2 mile run was taking close to an hour. I have never seen lifts take this long in 20 years of skiing/snowboarding.

Every locker was rented, so I had to take my valuables with me and just stuff the backpack on top of a locker hoping it wouldn't disappear. Ticket lines took forever, as did rentals for the people who didn't bring their own gear. The shuttle bus system was a clusterfuck. I got there before the half day session opened and only had time for five runs in the five hours that you get with a half day pass. The group I was with had to leave a half hour early, so I didn't even get five. What a mess. I guess it's a.m. or night sessions only if I go back to the NC mountains, but I doubt I'll brave it again. I really just tagged along because I had a free place to stay and already own my own gear. It was a complete waste of $48 for a lift ticket.
