i could only find OLD threads. should done this a long time ago but i'm interested in getting a suit or two. i have the slightest clue ab formal wear. i was thinking i could get something modern and sytlish from maybe express and be able to wear the pants/jacket out to an interview but also out on the town. i gathered from the old threads most get by purchasing a lesser suit and just having it tailored is that accurate?any stand out stores price and or quality wise?

This kinda depends on a lot of things. How much are you willing to spend, how often will you be wearing it, how long do you expect it to last? While I wouldn't recommend your first suits being custom(my family is in the business) you can get a good bit of look by spending the money to have a store bought suit custom tailored. However there are still plenty of choices when it comes to that, that answer could be anything from S&K to Belk to Jos A. Bank to Brooks Brothers. Help me out with some of those questions and I'll send you in the right direction.

I wore suits daily for 6 years. I have a few from S&K/ Mens Warehouse. These are great suits but are tough. I have large upper body with small wasit, so I had to have them altered like crazy. When you get a 46 jacket they assume you wear a 40inch waist.

BR has a ok selection, but newest suits are from Saks and are made to measure. I guess Itvdepends on use and how much you're going to spend. If you head to Saks and are going to by PM me and ill tell you who to see!

otherwise follow ^ he sounds like he knows the deal!

While wearing a suit is about looking good and professional, after awhile you start to realize its also very much about comfort. If you are going to spend 10-14 hours in it you need to be able to feel good. Hell after years I got more comfortable in a good suit than I was in shorts and a t-shirt. Which is odd since I don't even wear a tie to work anymore

True! A well made and one that fits correctly can be super comfortable and look awesome...even with no tie.

i was just kidding btw. getting a good deal on a suit and having it fitted is the best way to go.

belk, nordstroms, saks, etc... all have good deals on suits.

an off the rack suit is not a bad thing.

i've had a few suits during college that were off the rack and fitted on the spot. just make sure it's comfortable sitting and moving around and you should be good to go.

a couple of suits for different purposes are good too. a thin wool for summer, a thicker one for winter, a black one and a grey one that you can mix and match shirts and ties. that way you don't spend too much money and still have something that looks great.

make sure you get it dry cleaned often. febreeze doesn't cut it. you don't want it to smell like stale cig. smoke or that scotch and soda someone spilled on you.

Go to a place that sells exclusively suits. Hollister and Express aren't going to have a wide variety of options.

I prefer S&K, they have every style you can think of and from multiple designers. They are almost always doing specials like buy one get one free or buy one get one half off.

I got 2 suits, 2 shirts, a tie, and an overcoat for just over $200.

Actually you should just put a lot of effort into not getting it smelly or stained in the first place. Frequent dry-cleaning of suits damages the fabric, shortening the life of the suit and giving it a plastic like shine.

Jos A Bank probably has the best deals as far as quality for price. They aren't exactly the nicest suits, but they are of decent quality with a lot of style options for cheap prices (when they runs deals...which is almost all the time). Not to mention they tailor them to fit. (they recently just had a deal where you bought one suit and got two free...just an example of some of their sales)

But I'm also near two Brooks Brothers outlet stores and have been getting most of my suits from there (recently got two good suits for about $250 a pop). My law office partner was a strictly Banana Republic suit guy (and their suits looked really nice, slim, modern)...but that was when he got his cushy big firm job right out of law school...now he's back down to the Brooks Brother's outlets and Jos A Bank with me.

i was looking to spend between 100-200$ but of course if i can get almost as good for much less or much better for a lil more i'm all ears. i guess i should have a dedicated "interview" suit but like i mentioned i wouldn't mind something i could throw on with a dress shirt and have a nice "goin out" ensemble. it's hard to say how often i'll be wearing the suit at least initially it won't be for extended periods of time maybe once a week. of course that may change after i land the dream job

^As I said, S&K. You can get an interview suit and a going out suit for under $200 combined, and at good quality too.

Well in that case I say go a little higher than S&K(never been a fan, suits are too thin and tend to be cheap looking) and go with Men's Warehouse(have to look to find something decent though) or an off the rack Ralph Lauren, Nautica, Oscar de la Renta from Belk. I would suggest Jos A. Bank but it sounds like it might be a tad over budget and since you aren't going to be wearing it everyday all day you might not want to drop the cash. Generally professional wardrobes start out slow and you upgrade over time. If you are willing to drop a little extra on something that will last let's look at Jos A. Bank, perhaps catch a tero on sale for 199 or something.

yea at s&k I got 2 suits for a great price that I used for all my interviews and they are still the only suits I have and I've worn them to stuff like our company Christmas party etc. (I dont tend to just go "out" places where a suit is expected attire outside of a few weddings and that Christmas party though, just not my thing...so I cant comment there). Off the rack with some custom tailoring and I was good to go.

They are plenty nice enough, and if you get them tailored correctly they will look just as good as suits much more expensive to 90% of the people who see you wear one unless you are exclusively hanging out with ppl who are wearing $1000+ suits on a regular basis.

It depends on your style preference. Banana Republic is a little more stylish. Their suits tend to be a bit slimmer with more trendy "design." I'm a big fan of Brooks Brothers, but I can see the appeal of Banana of Republic over them sometimes.

Yeah...Brooks Brothers shirts first (on sale)...then JosABank next (also on sale). Wrinkle Free FTW! During the summer, you still gotta get that shit dry cleaned fairly often. But during the winter I can get a good 3 or 4 wears out of those shirts before I send 'em off.

This is the reason I have to buy pants and coats separate and have them tailered. I wear a 56 jacket, and the pants that match them would have the back pockets touching if they took out enough material to make a 36 waist. I don't know of any stores that will let you mix and match pairs to get what fits, so if anyone does know of one I'd like to know.

Go ahead and get two suits tailered to you when someone like S&K or Men's Warehouse runs a buy one get one free sale. A good fitting tailered suit tops a better quality suit that doesn't fit you as well, IMHO. Also, go ahead and pick out several shirt and tie combinations that match the suit and have the shirts altered as well if your body necessitates it.

i have bought 4 suits from Jos A Bank, and I love them all (actually most of them I got several pairs of slacks for them as well). They are good at finding something that is close to your size that can be altered nicely (I just wouldn't go to the lady they suggest going to- the one suit I had done there, the jacket is too tight along the shoulders, and the waist is too loose)

Didn't read the thread (almost dinnertime) but I'll throw out that I just got a suit at S&K a few months ago and it's awesome. I pretty much told the guy "I want something that is trendy and fits well". He showed me a few pinstripe suits and I had it altered there to fit my body and it looks really good.
