i went just a couple weekends ago to look at it as a possible wedding ceremony & reception site. it's a really nice place with an amazing collection of birds. it's really cool how you can go into the enclosures with them too (big open areas with netting up high so they don't fly away). there were 23841937423058230482374 different kinds of ducks. the people there are super nice too. i think i remember them saying they have like the largest collection of waterfowl (or was it birds in general?) in the world. kinda random to be in scotland neck, but i highly recommend going.
i don't know if you care to know, but we didn't choose it for our wedding site b/c we have too many people. 1/23/2009 8:59:13 AM |

^^^awesome. i just wanted to make sure it wasn't played up on the website and turns out to be some cages behind someone's trailer when i get there. guess you just don't expect such things out of scotland neck.
thanks 1/23/2009 9:10:46 AM |

many of the birds are in mating season right now and are all fluffed up and extra colorful. the lady said once it gets warmer, the plants will be much prettier but the birds won't be as pretty. i plan on going back soon. i'd go now, then later in the spring/summer too. 1/23/2009 9:13:56 AM |

i was planning to go on spring break. march 2-6. does that mean i miss both the pretty birds and the pretty plants? 1/23/2009 9:40:33 AM |
se7entythree YOSHIYOSHI 17377 Posts user info edit post |
you'd probably miss the birds, you might catch the plants though. although i'm sure they don't all mate at the same exact time so you'll probably still catch some. i'd still go though. it'd be interesting regardless.
just go one saturday. it's only 1.5 hours from raleigh (assuming that's where you are). it's not a spring break kinda trip imo.

my spring break usually consists of going home and fishing a lot. because of school, it's the only time i'll have to go there with my gf. i'll be in goldsboro, so it's not very far. 1/23/2009 9:57:14 AM |

ahh. okay. yeah my spring breaks were the same but in rocky mount and minus the fishing part. i meant the "not a spring break kind of trip" thing as in "it doesn't take a long time to go through the place", not in a "you should go to cancun instead" sense.

I went a year or so ago when it first opened because I have some in-laws that are from/live in the Neck. Very neat place. I never realized how long a toucans beak was compared to it's body. I think that guy was probably my favorite. 3/4/2009 8:28:35 AM |

Haha yea I live about 2 blocks from Sylvan Heights. Toad used to take me through it when I was a kid and he collected birds. Thats how the place started. The Herrings liked birds and collected them around their yard and eventually sold it to Mike and Ali Lubbock who turned it into a serious breeding facility and park. They are really great people and have a bunch of folks over for Halloween every year.

oh, i forgot to post in this thread but i went 3 or so weeks ago and it was pretty awesome. it was a couple hour drive out there from east raleigh, but i thought it was worth it for half a day. it was too cold for some of the exotic birds, i want to go back when it is warmer and see the ones i missed. 3/4/2009 7:23:03 PM |

it was cool. glad i went. i'll go back when it's warmer. the birds looked good, but the plants should look better when it's warm.

^Did ya'll come up from RM/Tarboro? If so, you passed just by my place. The community center that was on the left just as you were leaving "downtown" on the way to Sylvan is on the block right next to my place.
Shoulda been up this weekend. Should be a hella lot nicer then and have some more of the tropical birds out. 3/4/2009 10:26:36 PM |
