Not my fault.

While doing 7 loads of laundry this evening, there were a few casualties. As a general rule of laundry, I do not check all the pockets of things going in. Its the responsibility of the clothing owner.

Should I be held responsible for a melted credit card (easily replaceable) and a kind-of ruined passport? The passport went through the dryer before I found it in the lint trap.. the picture and info are still good and the stamps are good. The pages are just horribly curled. I figure its still good...

Of course if I see something sticking out of a pocket or if something falls out of a pile I won't put it in if it doesn't belong... but we're talking like 4 weeks of clothing for 2 people.. I can't be looking in every pocket!!

What does tdub think?

I agree with you. If someone else expects you to do their laundry, and they aren't paying you to do it, they accept all damages that you accident cause to their belongings. Tell them if they want you to be responsible they should pay you for doing their laundry from now on.

If they take you to court make sure you go on judge judy, she won't put up with that shit.

Responsibility belongs to the person who wore the clothes... Like you said, if you see something sticking out of a pocket or something falls out, sure, remove it and set it aside....

oh dont get me wrong, hes not mad, he blames himself but a friend disagreed and said it was my job to check pockets

if it was a small load i could see doing that... but there was an entire load of jeans and between sorting, folding and putting away AND packing to go out of town, im just not doing it

dont think it has a reader. i think he can get a replacement free anyway with his job

is there a large cost of replacement associated with these items?

if not, don't sit around trying to place blame. life's too short.

if you're going so far as to do someone else laundry FOR them, its def not your job to check all their damn pockets. they should be happy youre washing their clothes and leave it at that (again, unless you were just scooping shit off the floor and chucking it in the washer, cause thats a little different)

but either way:

i think the question is did you offer to do the laundry or did he ask? did he know you were about to do the laundry or did you pick a time when he was unaware you were going to do it

you can tell if it has an RFID chip in by how hard the front and back covers are - if they are easily bendable then it doesn't - the newer ones with the RFID chip in them are harder and although still bendable...much more resistant to bending and a harder material

just imagine if he left a tube of chapstick...and the lid comes off in the dryer..you would then be washing that load 3 or 4 times to get the chapstick out of all your clothes (particular bad when the clothes are dark color). THEN you would take the effort to check the pockets especially when YOUR clothes were affected also.

not your fault. checking pockets is the owners repsonsibility (unless they are a small child or something)

one time i had a pair of pants tossed to me as i was starting the laundry so i just threw them right in. turns out his cell phone was in there. he wasn't mad (at me at least).

also, i have sent my credit cards through the washer/dryer. other than being a little bent they always worked fine after.

FYI: Damaged passports, even if still legible, are invalid. That particular rule discourages tampering. If it was washed you'll need to get it replaced. I say this as someone who has washed their passport.

If you picked the clothes up off the floor, and neglected to check the pockets, and then washed them. I say its the washers fault.

If you took them out of a dirty laundry basket and washed them without checking the pockets then its the wearers fault.

Regardless, I have taken to always checking the pockets, it takes me roughly 3 secs per pant and saves a lot of trouble if there happens to be any gum, chapstick, electronics, wallet etc.

yeah I'd say it's pants guy's fault for firstly not checking his pockets when he tosses his clothes, and secondly, for putting one's passport in their pants pocket at all

It doesn't really matter whether it has an RFID, they're not required either way, just convenient and less secure

As someone mentioned earlier...is this something you volunteer or does he ask you to do this??

Its really not your fault...but you should still probably check the pants if this is something you do voluntarily.

not nowadays - 3-4 weeks tops to replace a damaged one - my wife just finally had her name updated on hers a few months ago and it was less than 3 weeks before she got the new one

i would have said it's the owner of the clothes' responsibility to clean out the pockets beforehand

HOWEVER! after living with a man for nearly 3 years (wow) and washing 3 blue ink pens and RUINING some of MY clothes...I check his fucking pockets.

If you were asked to do the laundry and not asked to check the pockets, or found the laundry in the wash and dried it so that you could do some laundry, most definitely it is the responsibility of the clothing owner.

If you decided to do the laundry of your own volition you should probably check the pockets. It ceases to be a favor when you start ruining their shit

it is not that difficult to check pockets; the fact that there were seven loads makes no difference

it was a mixture. his washer isn't hooked up yet because there is something up with the water line and we were going out of town so i offered to throw his in with mine since i was doing laundry anyway. so he loaded up his laundry in my car and i took it inside and washed it.

looking back, he leaves stuff in his pockets all the time so i should get in the habit of checking. im just used to not checking because i rarely use my pockets much less leave things in there.

no rfid. but as of 2 weeks ago he cant find the passport anymore so its time for a replacement either way-- good to know that a washed passport is no good!

chapstick is the only thing ive ever washed on accident.. and it was in my jeans-- luckily the cap didnt come off!

haha no, we're just 2 busy individuals with large wardrobes so clothes tend to pile up before you realize you need to do laundry. plus like i said we were going out of town so we needed certain items for the trip

moral of the story, i'll check pockets in the future because i've learned that he forgets to empty his pockets. its just not something i was used to doing so i forgot

haha this is true, sometimes to a fault but i enjoy doing laundry and he picks up other chores i dont like so it works. plus, he's not the type to freak out over something stupid like a washed passport and melted credit card. i just wanted to debate since my friend disagreed with me
