chocolate lab mix: I picked her up from breeder's place, got her home and noticed she leaks urine. Jinzo never did this. Well when he was 6 months he would do it a little. The only thing I can think of is that her little bladder doesnt have the muscle capacity to hold it or she has a UTI. Her urine smells awful. I read horror stories about it being a deformity in their bladders. She's going to the vet today.
Anyone have something similar happen with their little puppy? Did u find out what was wrong? What did you do? 1/23/2009 9:34:00 AM |

if the urine smells bad and she's leaking, then i would guess infection. even if she did have weak bladder muscles, i wouldn't think that would make the urine smell horrible. off the the vet
how old is she?

Thats what I am thinking. She drinks water like a horse! I wouldn't see a reason that some broad spectrum antibiotic like Clavamox wouldn't work... Thats an expensive but effective drug from what I can remember... Unless they came out with some awesomer...

i didn't think clavamox was that expensive. i wouldn't worry too much just yet.
is she drinking AND peeing a lot?
the drinking thing could be diabetes or a kidney problem, but i wouldn't hop on that bandwagon just yet. take her to the vet, make sure you describe all the symptoms, and they'll probably run blood and urine tests.
after reading over symptoms of UTIs in dogs though, it's most likely that.

who woulda known that my new puppy would be a little squirter I wish I had pics... she's sooo cute and is getting brave around the big dog LOL He doesn't know what to make her yet... when she gets bigger, she'll stomp him in the ground LOL
Well she is just a puppy and thats pretty common to have to take her out alot... but she is drinking a lot.. but I dont think thats incredibly abnormal. When she leaks just a little, the smell is horrible... She does lick it when she leaks, which may be an indication that its painful? the first thing that went through my brain was a UTI...
She "leaked" in her kennel last night but it wasn't super wet like she had to actually pee and the first time she woke up this morning was 5:30 compared to the night before which was 1:30 and 6

yeah, there are weird autoimmune diseases that attack the bladder but those are pretty rare. The vet couldn't find any bacteria in my dog's urine (culture came back clean), but there were WBCs so we tried antibiotics and it went away. Strangeness. 1/23/2009 1:40:24 PM |

Hey guys.. thanks for your concerns...
She indeed had a UTI. She's on her third dose and the smell has cleared up. Does anyone know the nature of UTI treatment?
Even though the smell is gone, it seems as though her flood gates are wide open... I take her out quite frequently. And she really doesn't squat to pee... I will wake her up to take her out and her little bottom is soaked and I dont want her to develop sores on her belly.
I also just called the vet and she's only been on meds for a day... She said to give it more time...
She has been drinking more which I guess the Clavamox does that? Which may account for her leaking more. Poor girl
When I get back from my run with my other pooch I'll post pics of her...
Again thanks for your concern and advice...
^ ohh I am not sure, she is but a baby and the guy that bred her I guess had her outside in their barn or something. Jaeda had actually gotten out during the snow storm and possibly with that stress got sick from that. But honestly I am not sure how long she's been leaking... I heard that the surgery is hard expensive and is rarely successful, but this comes from reading the "Labrador" forums. I hope and pray its nothing to that extent

^personally having had a UTI before as a human, it causes frequent urination and that will continue until the meds are working really well. I believe this is the body's way to try to rid itself of the bacteria in the urinary tract. I assume their bodies would react much as the same. I wouldn't be alarm by the frequent urination or drinking more water. Drinking more water helps flush the pup's system and prevents dehydration from using the bathroom quite frequently.
Hope she feels better soon! UTIs are no fun! 1/24/2009 10:27:58 PM |

Give it some time before you worry so much about it!
UTIs happen to people and animals alike. All of the symptoms that you have described are typical UTI symptoms. Give the medication time to work. It hasn't been long enough.
Rarely is there a major medical reason behind it. Not only did my son had a UTI recently without known reason, but my sister in law's dog had one.

Yeah... I had a UTI like 5 years ago and to be honest, I thought I recovered really quick say within a few days of taking meds. I mean, the day after I went in to the ER, I felt significantly better... And I was never in any pain (Yes I went to the ER because I was fine one minute and the next I had a fever of 102 and I felt shitty; weird I know)
Well I am just paranoid... She's so little and it kills me to see her sick :-( But on a brighter side I do have some cute picks of her and her and her brother.
Today she felt a lot better as far as her mood. She played alot with Jinzo and he is really starting to like her.
In this pic, Jinzo is WTF?! lol

BEAUTIFUL puppy!! Hope she continues to get better. And yeah, Clavamox made Hootie drink so much water when she was hurt. And since she was on cage rest, she would pee in her sleep and just be soaked when she woke up. And since she couldn't move her front legs, we just had to check on her from time to time. It was an awful few days before she started using her legs again, and now - she's good as new!! 1/26/2009 12:39:23 AM |

Ive been following this thread. Im glad that Jaeda is getting better!!
Having sick doggies can be really hard. A few weeks ago i was scared out of my mind, quite literally, when I came home and Banjo vomitted a good amount of blood. The on call vet was woken up at 3 am to me crying on the phone (I was convinced that he was dying). We got him in and after tests, labs, and $texas, Banjo was diagnosed with pancreatitis. Apparently it's relatively common but I had never heard of it before. He's okay now, but only after a three night stay at the vet office.
Having a sick dog is extremely nerve racking. Again though, I am very happy to hear that Jaeda is feeling better. She is absolutely beautiful. Are her eyes blue? 1/29/2009 9:30:54 PM |

^^ Yeah, I am sorry about that... I am glad your pup is better... I have never had issues with Jinzo and I thought that was because I did every preventative measure I could so I wouldnt have to go through all that worry. But I guess not all dogs are as hardy as him LOL. I took her out to the country to get some energy out and she was great. She still leaks a bit but not nearly as bad... And she is really good about whining when she has to go out... Sometimes she will get to the door and I am looking for my shoes or something and she can't hold it any longer and whooosh! She tries LOL But I noticed she is having longer "pee" sessions which tells me she is holding more urine rather letting it leak out.
I guess this medicine takes some time to fully work. 2/2/2009 10:37:07 AM |

If you think Jinzo is nuts, you ought to see this little girl... She latches on to Jinzo's neck with her needle puppy teeth and he's cool with it! But he's 5 and half and is still out of control
Welp... I talked with a Labrador breeder from the Labrador forum and went through some scientific journals... Based on the incidence of ectopic ureters, it is more likely its something else. The breeder suggested an inverted vulva. Now I can take some pictures post Jaeda's goods and the picture of the good vulva and a picture of the bad vulva and see what you guys think. But I did not put NSFW in the title
But basically at this point, the vets (and yes I have been to more than one) are idiots. The breeder gave me hints about keeping her free of these UTIs until we can figure out what her deal is. And this may be helpful for anyone else that is thinking of getting a female puppy and has the same issue:
Inverted vulvas are basically vulvas that are not completely "folded" out and there's skin on the inside that collects urine and thus presents a good place to harbor bacteria and urine leakage.
It normally corrects itself after the first heat so no spay until after then. I had planned to wait to spay her anyways.
To prevent infections, the breeder told me to mix the goo from cranberry gel tabs in with her food. It keeps the pH low and prevents bacteria from adhering to the urinary tract walls. The breeder also mentioned to give her probiotics, which I had been giving a small source from her food, but I purchased probiotics and is mixing with her food. Finally, I have been wiping her girly parts with baby wipes. And so far everything looks good...
I will be taking her to the vet and bringing up this inverted vulva issue and I hope its that. EU surgery is not a path I would like to take.. but we do what we have to make our babies
^ Yeah we call her Piddle Pup all the time. But we have to not get frustrated with the situation even though its tough.
To date she is about 25lbs and loosing all of her baby fur :-( I will try to take more pics and post them.2/18/2009 7:52:09 PM |

I'm all for adoption (mine's adopted) but that's not the point of this thread.
I had a lab when I was younger that had the inverted vulva issue. Made breeding her very difficult, if not impossible. She didn't have the leaking issue that yours has, though. At least if she did, it was very minor and not noticeable. 2/27/2009 7:46:27 AM |

For your information, I never paid a dime for her! As beautiful as she is, she is not a purebred chocolate lab. I think she is mix between lab and Chesapeake Bay retriever.. i may have already mentioned this. I think you may have misread my post about talking to a breeder: I have been getting advice from the labrador forum and this breeder has been exceptional in giving me advice.
For an update: She is still leaking urine and we think she has another UTI. So this is UTI #3 we will know today when I call the vet back. She is currently at a kennel that belongs to a friend of mine. I don't think I could trust her with anyone else at this point. She took her to the vet this morning. And she is at this kennel because I have to head out of town. But anyone that knows me knows that I wouldn't leave my dogs with someone unable to meet their needs esp of my little girl.
In two weeks we are having and ultrasound done which will diagnose any abnormalities in her urinary tract. The diagnosis will be 400 to 600 and if she needs surgery it can be up to 3000!
So any prayers for my little girl would be much appreciated. I already miss her soo much. Jinzo has been a great companion and so has she... I could ask for two better dogs.
But I thank you guys for keeping her in your thoughts and prayers...
I'll keep you updated as her condition changes or when we find out the results and her prognosis.
But we are taking this one step at a time... I am just thinking about the good things about her and it helps to keep me from going under 2/27/2009 2:09:54 PM |

I just back from the vet.
Just to let you guys know, I have been taking Jaeda to two different vets. The one she goes to in Raleigh wanted to test for this EU and after getting the results back today from the vet in Advance, NC, the vet said that she is sending her urine to be cultured and that will tell alot as to what may be going on. She said that is it possible that she may have vaginitis which can cause her to have the same symptoms.
After all the research I have been doing, an EU is highly unlikely although it does happen. Soooooo we will get the culture back in a few days and I will let you know what the vet says... Oh how exciting... not that my pup is in pain but the fact that I don't have to pin it right down to an EU. 2/27/2009 3:26:37 PM |

After getting a second opinion, I am finally taking her to see a specialist tomorrow. She is on antibiotcs for the 4th time to treat a reoccurring infection. Her urine showed no signs of infection on Saturday and then Monday her urine started smelling bad again. Thank God the vet gave me some antibiotcs without a culture or urine analysis. In order for this diagnosis to be worth a f***, the infection and inflammation has to be pretty much gone.
She stopped eating last night and didnt eat this morning. I let her bowl in her crate, hoping she'll eat. She has been a lot of water too... I just hope and pray she doesn't have renal failure because of all this...

She is seeing Dr. Parnell (sp?) at the Specialty Hospital in Greensboro. So far from meeting with the vet, her bladder seems to be normal. They did a freebie ultrasound scan to collect urine from her and noticed her bladder is fine.
I am glad it isn't too small... So I am guessing it is her ureters.
^All of the vets she went to says her vulva is normal.
So now I am in a Borders cafe in greensboro awaiting the call it really makes me nervous...
And for future reference, if anyone needs to see a specialty vet, I highly recommend this place. So far they have been very informative. They also have done a great job taking care of her. 3/27/2009 3:29:44 PM |
