I need to create an internet forum (similar to wolfweb) for my office to use at work. What are the best free forum engines available?

phpBB and vBulletin are 2 of the more popular ones. really depends on what you're going to run it on (hosted or not, windows or linux) and what features you want

[Edited on January 27, 2009 at 1:14 PM. Reason : you could always license crazyweb ]

hate to say it but CrazyWeb isn't worth anything more than free

/rant begin
considering there are 100 other forums that are free that have a TON more features... don't take 10min. to login to, don't say OH SHIT everytime there's an error, have better search engines, etc. etc. the list goes on.
/rant end

Yeah pretty much. It was 2006 when I wanted to switch my forums to new software and made the inquiry. I was shocked at the price tag.

I use phpbb. It has more features than most people will ever need.

Jake would have to pay me money to license this pos forum system.

For example, I just was graced with this lovely page while trying to access this forum:

Quote :
"Server Error in '/' Application.
Runtime Error
Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="Off"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>

Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

<!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

<configuration>
<system.web>
<customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
</system.web>
</configuration>
"

It happens at least once a week. Never seen such errors in any forum except for here. Quality.

lol CrazyWeb was never worth anything if you consider the mindnumbingly outrageous premium one would pay for ASP.NET hosting

the only part of CrazyWeb not deserving of being shat on is the layout, which I noticed recently is pretty much 100% ASP.NET Form Designer output in NCSU Red

I like PunBB ( http://punbb.informer.com/ ) since it doesn't absolutely hose a server even at high traffic volumes.

I've always liked the layout of crazyweb more than any other forums software.

Only to have them pull your account or you see CPU quota exceeded every 5 minutes.

I had the website and forum http://www.realitymod.com for a Battlefield 2 Mod on bluehost and learned quickly that shared hosting was not the place for a forum with any amount of traffic.

vBulletin is badass... but its not free, but if you look around the appropriate places you can located the latest version that has all the server callbacks removed.

I like CrazyWeb layout because it simple, no frills, and straight to the point. Probably great for a work environment, in terms of layout.

except for all the server errors, runtime errors, login delays, page timeouts, no tech support to speak of, horrible search engine, no feature updates (anymore)... i mean other than that it's great for a work environment ....
