That's a very different experience than the pit bull that my girlfriend rescued. The one that hates men.And anyone wearing a hat.And has attacked the alpha male belonging to the people who adopted it several times so they have to keep it in a separate pen and walk it by itself.Very different experience indeed.[Edited on January 29, 2009 at 12:41 PM. Where in Cary? If it was near Ralph street, I might know whose dog it was.
1/29/2009 1:38:35 PM
Pitt bulls are only dangerous if hey are raised as such.My family has one. We found her wandering the streets when she was between 6 months and a year old. She was very aggressive toward other animals and she was aggressive toward people if she didn't get her way. It took a while to train her but now she's the sweetest dog you'll ever meet. The only reason you hear about pitt bull attacks all the time is because people train pitt bulls to be aggressive.
1/29/2009 1:43:32 PM
Based on your anecdote it sounds like Pitt Bulls are aggressive by nature and they only become non-aggressive if you train them as such. You can train a tiger to jump through flaming hoops. I guess that means tigers are only aggressive if they are trained that way.
1/29/2009 1:59:54 PM
What he's saying is that it is somewhat en vogue to train pitbulls to be aggressive (even aside from the percentage that are no-kidding trained for dogfighting, which you don't really see with most other breeds).
1/29/2009 2:02:05 PM
Don't get me wrong. I know that any dog breed can be a jerk or a sweetheart. Training is only one of the environmental factors that will eventually lead to the dog's temperament. I just don't see the point in getting a dog that, at 35-50 lbs., far exceeds other breeds in dog attack fatalities. So you can train it and make it a nice dog like you have something to prove to the world. Big whoop. I wouldn't get a Clydesdale if I wanted to put bows in it's mane and ride around the field even though I probably could if I wanted to.
