Another angle I hadn't considered, per one reddit post is that "there were a bunch of gay people in countries where homosexuality has the death penalty that were using it. When the news of the hack came out we had some of them on the various LGBT subs asking for help emigrating. I fear for them."

the moral high horse the hackers claim to ride is full of unintended consequences that completely negate such claims.

To me, there is just a larger privacy issue at stake here. The hackers dont seem to have gained much. The website itself might lose business, though not as much business as they would have lost bending to the hacker's demands. The biggest losers here are the users whose privacy was violated.

And everyone should care about that, whether you agree with adultery or not. Why? Because most people do store sensitive information with websites, who they trust will store it securely. If it only takes one hacker group to extort a website they disagree with, targeting users, we are all potential victims.
