and it completely fucked you over on taxes. this is the first year i've ever had to pay anything. $65 federal, $145 state. it would have been $167 state, but north carolina gives volunteer fire/ems workers a WHOLE WHOPPING $250 deduction, haha.totally not fair. i pay for all my shit.

My parents did this last year. I told them they better plan on filing an amendment, or working something out, because I wasn't gonna get fucked over for it. They sure as hell don't have any grounds to claim me as a dependent, and haven't for a couple years.I think we ended up doing a 60/40 split on the difference.

I didn't file as independent until after I graduated (22), even though I have been financially independent since I was 18.That's pretty normal. Most states allow parents to claim children as dependent up to 23-25. I was covered under their medical insurance umbrella until I graduated, and my car insurance was massively discounted as well.
