Background: 4 friends move into a place. 1 turns into a bum, doesn't want to work, and ends up moving back in with his parents. We rented out that room to someone we did not know but was vouched for by a different friend of ours. Well that guy ended up turning out to be crazy, dropped out of school, and disappeared. He did not tell his parents or close friends anything. So that leave 3 in a 4 bedroom. 1 guy just got a job with Areva and will be moving to Charlotte. It will be on him to pay his portion of the rent or find someone to take his room. So I could end up with a second random person. So there are 2 of us left. To top things off, we were never notified that a gas bill could reach $466 in one month. Question: The landlord is a decent guy. Hopefully I can reason with him to let us out of our lease. If not, what is the typical process involved with breaking a lease? I'm hoping to just pay him through March and loose the deposit. Just thought I would see if anyone has experience in this with a private owner.

Yeah, just tell your landlord about the situation. He should let you out of the lease in a month. He'd probably rather rent out his apartment to someone that can pay him in full, than rent to people who can't]

^ This, and you can probably claim hardship/relocation (there's a provision for this if you're more than 30 miles away I think) and get out of the lease in 30 days if that guy who's moving to work at Areva has his name on the lease.

im pretty sure this guy has an individual lease with a private owner. Private owners just care about two things, you pay on time, and you dont fuck up his/her apartment. If this is an individual lease you probably signed a contract that says youre fucked until it expires.
