They both sound great, so it really depends on what I'm in the mood for....
However, I eat sun-dried tomatoes, goat cheese, and pesto fairly often, so I'll try:

^ Yeah the sweet potato one I had at the Weathervane about a year ago. I wasn't entirely sure about it but it was SO FREAKIN' GOOD when it arrived at the table.

Why do people say that?
Why do you think the chef was trying too hard?
I mean, unless they're cooking hospital food or something, aren't they supposed to impress?

Why, on account of this menu item not being to your taste, do you put the blame on the chef?
How is it excessive?...in that you said "too"

I see two vegetables, one meat, a starch and a cream sauce, with flavors that go together.

I know you're not referring to the sweet potato ravioli, as that is a perfect example of the opposite of your point.

to me, a chef's skill is best exhibited in doing something simple but outstanding. taking a vast array of ingredients does show creativity, but when you use so many ingredients, none are likely to stand out, and it's all probably going to get muddled.

I also see pecans and maple. I'm all for a sweet and savory dish, but this has the potential to combine cloyingly sweet with far too salty. It could be good, but the 2nd dish has more potential.

that would be delicious

^^ the 2nd dish has LESS potential - it is more conservative and thus more safe... giving it less potential to be amazing but a greater likelihood of being good

[Edited on February 1, 2009 at 11:02 AM. Reason : good... not great - tomatoes and cheese, while delicious, are a little blase]

You honestly think that sweet potato ravioli has too many ingredients? That's crazy. I understand what you're saying, but this recipe simply isn't like that. It has an average,( not even above average,) number of ingredients. Also, they go together. Nothing is muddled. You point about "simple but outstanding" actually almost applies to this recipe. I don't know how any of you can view this as having an excessive number of ingredients -- it simply doesn't. Is gumbo too complex? There's like a dozen ingredients there...

Yup. Have you heard of pesto in ravioli?
Well, guess what's in pesto? pine nuts.
[probably toasted and chopped] pecans add a similar savory oily deliciousness.
Nothing odd there.

No, artsy is either how it looks (arranged on the plate like a flower or something,) or how arbitrary or rare the ingredients are. This is just gourmet, and not very.

The first sounds waaay too rich. I'd rather go with the goat cheeze one and I'd rather have a marinara sauce instead of a pesto one.

I would have agreed with you until I tried it. It's actually a really good combo. There isn't any added sweetener to the ravioli itself and only very small amounts of country ham, providing just enough saltiness to balance the sweetness of the cream sauce.
