into a kegerator?I went to go talk to a guy about a job, whose business is near by, and when he took me through his shop, I saw two old school refrigerators. I mentioned how much i liked them and he told me that i could have them. He said one he thinks works and one doesnt. From the looks of it, the seem in good condition cosmetically. I was thinking of making them all prom queen like and turning them into kegorators with a kit....sell...profit.Wasnt sure how hard it was to do or if anyone has any tips.looked similar to these. hopefully the dimensions of it can work.*move to appropriate board if need be

nopeno one has ever done this
2/3/2009 5:34:56 PM
obligatory running joke

be sure to drill a hole through the door and bust what's inside. i won't tell you what it is, but i'll tell you that it's a mistake you only have to make once.
2/3/2009 5:35:30 PM
unless you plan on replacing everything mechanical/electronic in there, why would anyone buy this from you/why would you waste your time? those refrigerators aren't going to last too much longer if they are that old
2/3/2009 5:36:46 PM
they aren't that hard to convert if you can follow instructions. Also, make sure the fridge is big enough inside to fit a keg and CO2 tank, otherwise you are gonna be wasting a perfectly good fridge.^You have no clue how hardcore that type of fridge is. My grandmother has one that is about 60 years old that on its medium setting will still freeze water bottles. Those things are awesome aside from how much electricity they eat up.[Edited on February 3, 2009 at 5:40 PM. Reason : ...]

^^good point...i mean the guy said that i could have them for free, so i was just trying to think of something i could make them into to get a little extra cash...i was also thinking of just getting them, taking all the mechanical/electrical shit out and making it into an armoire single door deal^Nice to know. I figure i'm going to at least take the one that he said he thinks works and test it out....I'm going to sell it to some college kid around town...i wont be using it[Edited on February 3, 2009 at 5:45 PM. i saw a guy convert one into an atomic bomb survival shelter, and used it as a soap box derby racer whilst
2/3/2009 5:40:06 PM
its not hard. even i have done it.
2/3/2009 5:45:08 PM
suggest a certain kit?
2/3/2009 5:46:02 PM
^dont use the one that traub used
2/3/2009 5:47:58 PM
WHICH ONE IS THAT?????????
2/3/2009 5:50:03 PM
I think it came from total wine....and its either his afro engineering or the kit that's the problemso upon further investigation, that kit is probably fine
2/3/2009 5:51:30 PM
if you offer a warranty on it, I'd be interested in getting one.
2/3/2009 5:51:32 PM
rule number one...never offer a warranty on a product that you have a good chance of honoring...well, i'd feel horrible if i did sell one and it shit the bed shortly after it being sold....i'm having second thoughts of investing in this idea
2/3/2009 5:55:32 PM
Nerdchick just got home and when i told her the good news about more junk sitting in the drive way, SHE WAS THRILLED!!!Nah...she was actually a negative nacy about it....she's got a bag of chocolate chips she's munching on...i'm going to throw in a few coffee beans.
2/3/2009 6:11:38 PM
I've done it and it is easy as shit, especially if you already have the fridge. Literally 30 minutes of work. You pretty much just need to drill 1 hole. Just buy a kegerator kit online for about $150 and get it done. Here's a good spot. With the CO2 tank, you are looking at about $150.http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/kits/skk.shtml[Edited on February 3, 2009 at 6:22 PM. Reason : a]

2/3/2009 6:35:20 PM

2/3/2009 6:35:46 PM
If you have a drill then you can do it. It is super easy.
2/3/2009 6:36:49 PM
2/3/2009 6:38:46 PM
^ nah, you want to keep the CO2 cold as well. at least, that's what I was told
2/3/2009 6:39:49 PM
Yeah, pretty much thought it would be as far as hooking it all up, but what i'm a little more interested in is restoring that frige...thinking of trying to give it a polished look (dunno if this can be done since i dont know the material...figured it was sheet steel)...get that paint off...make/change the hardware and what not[Edited on February 3, 2009 at 6:42 PM. When I built my kegerator I found a full sized fridge on Craigslist for like $75. It was only like a year old. It was sweet because it had the freezer on top so we could keep our pint glasses and mugs in there and always have them frosted.
2/3/2009 8:21:30 PM
damn, that is sweet...frosty mugs is just as good as bottles in an ice chest...sounds like you did it rightI wish i had use for a keg...[Edited on February 3, 2009 at 8:59 PM. Reason : i]

2/4/2009 6:13:57 AM
Please don't take one of those tank fridges & destroy it. If he will give it to you, you can just clean it up & sell it. You still make money, & you don't have to ruin anything.
