My arms are sore. I have a monopod but I couldn't find it. but I don't think it'd really work anyway. I don't know how to get a portrait setup with my monopod, I think i need a better/different one.

Also, fuck Kiwi and her opinion. That photo is fine. It's a bit noisy, but it was shot for print in a student newspaper so it is perfectly adequate. If cranking the iso is the difference between getting a shot and not getting a shot than you've got to do it.

I wouldn't expect Kiwi to know anything about shooting sports though.

On the side note, I think the facial expression is great, very good capture. Although I'd say the exposure is a bit on the under side, I'd maybe brighten it between .15 - .30 exposure and recover the highlights or raise the shadows a bit using either the highlights & shadows tool or doing a level curve adjustment.

When you are shooting an event like that, just meter how much light the room is getting and set the camera on manual. If you are metering with a handhold meter, point it towards your shooting position, not up. You want to include the lights but as well as a bit of shadow. Also, reduce contrast in camera, go to your image settings and change your preferences. Usually I just put my camera on neutral instead of standard (which is +3 contrast). It really matters if you are just shooting jpeg, but if you are shooting raw, it doesn't matter. I find the white balance to be about 4500k and a +5 magenta in a event like that, but not all venues are the same.
