LOL

But seriously for the most part it was either "go online and apply" and they take my resume anyway, or it was "well we're not hiring right now" and they still took my resume.

my main beef? if they aren't hiring, THEN WHY THE FUCK ARE YOU AT A CAREER FAIR?!

I found that to be a lil aggravating and lol-worthy at the same time.

I did want to talk to the Extreme Networks guys but the foreigners had 2 lines long going almost out the door, and Intel's line did go out the door; however Cisco had NO line whatsoever. What's up with that? Same thing with microsoft, they didn't have a line either.

I did get a bunch of free shirts and tons of free schwag; so that's cool.

yeah the big public companies generally just tell you to apply online, I had a few interviews for summer internships after the career fair last year, some steel company in charlotte and a few other locals.

No joke with the "We're just here to take resumes from you but then redirect you to our online 'career center'" attidude.

What a joke. Pisses me off. There is less and less point to career fairs every semester.

I wanna go to the career fair so I CAN talk to a person instead of being brushed off on some poorly managed 'online career center.'

career fairs are great places to learn about companies; not so much to get a job

[Edited on February 5, 2009 at 6:59 PM. Reason : of course it depends on the company]

personally when i think about the career fair, im just in it to talk to real life employees about what they do usually at their job. gives me an idea of what i'd be expecting to do if i worked there.

I got 4 of my 5 jobs directly from career fairs...

I also happen to have a personality and a well written resume... and made the absolute most out of every position and was able to further improve that resume...

just saying, they aren't as worthless as most people say they are.

The other one (which was my 2nd job) I got off the co-op online list serve thing b/c I had a well written resume that hit all the appropriate keywords

How do you know if you have a "well written resume"?

Where do you go to get advice on how to write one well, etc.?

I've been to the career center and reviewed my resume with they guy from my college (PAMS) but maybe there's something else I can do...

I went to the college of management job fair just the other day (note: I graduated 5 years ago and not even from the college of management). Mine was the only resume that was taken home by the one company I went there to speak with. I know this because I know one of their recruitment people.

The best resume advice I've gotten:

Deborah Brown in bus201: Look at the job description your applying for, pick out the key words and put them directly in your resume. Online screening is done with programs most of the time so this is the best way to get your resume actually seen by a real person.

Then one of the guys I worked under at my 2nd co-op did recruiting for Intel:
Your bullet points under your experience should all start with action describing words...
developed, created, team work,

example:
3) FTTx R&D PCB hardware design Co-op, Alcatel, Raleigh NC 5/2004-7/2006
• 2.4Gb/s hardware design concepts for Passive Optical Networks
• Designed clock distributions, hot-swap circuits, power filtering circuits
• Developed and implemented multi-gigabit optical and electrical test setups, including signal integrity, using a wide variety of high end lab equipment including: TDA’s, Oscilloscopes, and O/E converters
• Implemented microprocessors, FPGA’s, DDR2 and SDRAM memory, boot proms
• Worked on design, review, and trouble shooting teams through complete design cycle from system description to handing off final product to product engineering
• Designed a PLL proof of concept board proving a low cost FPGA could be used to implement the
phase detector and the charge pump functions of a PLL across industrial temperature range.

Second part is definitely true. You want to call out your accomplishments and the changes or improvements you caused. It is especially good if you can quantify these. Increased sales by x%, Implemented new business strategies which decreased cost of production by $300,000, etc.

Pretty much. It's just a document saying, "Here's the reasons that I'm so great that you can't afford not to hire me."

Make it concise, directed at the specific job you're after (yes, this means you need to revise your resume every time you send it out to a different place), and for God's sake make it easy to read.

Too bad you weren't in Engineering. E101 requires that you write a resume, and it's graded based on how well it's written.

My resume is currently pretty shitty in terms of job experience, but what do you expect from someone my age? Anyway, ThePeter has a solid resume

that kinda depends on the teacher. what the fuck does a 18 yr old freshman have to put on a resume anyway?

however, ENG 331 is required for engrs and was helpful on resume stuff for me

I left the fair because I couldn't move around the damn place to talk to anyone. I spoke with and interviewed w/ the NAVSEA guys, and that actually sounds pretty damn awesome. I've got an application in with them now and, if everything else falls through, that's what I'm aiming for.

I just hope I didn't overlook anything in my past life that's a dealbreaker as far as security clearance goes.

Yeah, I took ENG 331 and had to do the same assignment. I got an A, but my resume is not getting it done in the real world.

Maybe including the keywords is what I'm missing.

How should I include something like the huge month-long 30 hours per week project I did for a class on a resume?

I talk about things like that in the cover letter (I write a different and highly specialized one for every job I apply to), but I'm guessing they don't run the cover letter through the computer program that tells them what candidates are any good.

Argh.

I wish I had known about the keyword thing earlier.

I don't know where to put the stuff I did in classes.

Some jobs ask for you to know Flame AA or gel electrophoresis.

I did those extensively in classes, but not in all the jobs I've listed. And I'm out of room.

So where to put it?

i look at resumes that the script sends us for about 30 seconds, at most, if it is a bad one.

i highly recommend putting an objective statement that relates to the job ad.
