This is more than the "Did I leave the oven on?" feeling menopausal women have.

I unplug my microwave after each use.
I flip the breaker to my furnace when I leave for the day.
I pull the battery cable to my car in the driveway(it is a Ford, after all; those things light easier than Zippos).
I UNPLUG MY BEDSIDE LAMP EACH MORNING, AND LOOK AT THE RED MENACING ALARM CLOCK WITH MISTRUST. IS IT GETTING HOT? NO. WARM. BUT WARM COULD LEAD TO HOT. WELL, IT'S ON A FORMICA COUNTER....WILL IT BE OKAY FOR EIGHT HOURS? WHY CHANCE IT? I CAN ALWAYS RESET IT TONIGHT.

My inattention caused a large fire one time, but I think this fear also stems from a lack of trust in general and a need to control my surroundings.

Did you know the author of The Brave Little Toaster committed suicide?

I won't leave my dryer running when I leave the house for more than a few minutes
and I don't leave the crockpot cooking while I'm not here

that's about it.

My parents still have these old electromechanical alarm clocks from the 1960's. They glow an eerie orange and hum constantly, always warm to the touch.

Terrifying.

I'm guessing placing all your appliances on a timer doesn't work for you? Perhaps with a red/green LED readout for energize/de-energized?

I don't have any problem jumping off a tractor that's running in first gear and catching up to it later...but the idea of a machine running, without my consent, an hour away from me...*shudders.

By the way, my grandfather was ghost riding the whip back in the 1930's.

My mid-90's mazda caught fire just a few months ago. Battery came a bit loose, the positive terminal hit the hood. I caught it with 15 minutes...the battery was shot, the cable insulation was melted, and the paint burned away.

Not much time, it's habit now. If not for roommates I would just pull the master breaker when I leave the morning.

on that note, what do you do if your roomates plug in the microwave, leave the furnace running, etc and you come home and find it unattended?

Well I didn't leave it plugged in, so my conscious is clear in the event of catastrophe.
