Why do I need to consume x amount of calories per day in order to lose weight when...

(x = way more than the 1500 daily calorie intake recommended for Males)

Please...someone explain this to me.

Isn't the old saying something like "work off more than you put in", or something along those lines?

I read the best way to lose weight is start with a low calorie intake for a week, then go lower for another week, then bump it up again to speed your metabolism back up. Then repeat the cycle.

That could be wrong though.

^^^depending on daily activity and how big you are and shit like that

^the best way to lose weight is to stop eating when you are no longer hungry (not full), to not snack during the day all the time, and lay off fast food. couple a decent diet with a decent work out plan, and you will get to a better weight. if you want specifics hire a personal trainer/dietitian.

^I would also add that eatting late (past 7:30) or so is a big problem for a lot of people

I disagree with the snacking thing. It is highly recommended to eat small meals and several snacks throughout the day to keep your metabolism on a straight line vice a sine wave.

depends on when you decide to hit slumber mode and become less active/go to sleep. if your body is used to meals at like 10 AM, 2 PM, and 8 PM and you don't sleep till like 1 or 2 AM then you won't have problems eating at later than 7:30

^if you minimize snacking you're more likely to be hungry when a real meal comes around, allowing you to get the good shit in you before you fill up. cutting snacks during the day will also cut your carb and calorie intake, which if you're worried about your weight, is probably way too high. the idea is that an apple or a banana or something like that between a meal is probably okay, but getting all kinds of cake and candy and having little mini-meals is probably not going to do much for you. of course if you're on different diets the idea goes out the window (like the atkins, where you can literally eat all day if you don't exceed your carbs)

and avoid all the sugary juice drinks and sodas

if you are thirsty go for water, it will kill the thirst and prevent you from accumulating excess calories

sodas and alcoholic beverages are usually deal breakers on diets, one every now and then isn't bad, but if you wanna lose weight you gotta cut back and be selective on how that alcohol enters your body

If you work out a lot every day and build dense muscle mass, you will burn fat while you sleep. If you don't consume enough calories to build that dense muscle, your body will think you are starving and will go in reverse. Basically, your body needs to think it needs a constant stream of fuel in order for it to think it needs to build muscle steadily. This is why diets never work.

more calories =/= higher metabolism

metabolism has much more to do w/ how often you eat...eating 2500 calories a day over 5-6 small meals builds up metabolism, whereas eating 2500 calories a day with one huge meal doesn't

[Edited on February 10, 2009 at 10:54 AM. Reason : so I was told in a high school nutrition class at least]

^

Yeah, your body needs to think it relies upon a constant stream of calories or several small meals spaced out throughout the day. One huge meal isn't a steam, it's a massive load. That will result in a slower metabolism, unless you are like michael phelps and burn a godly amount of calories in one day.

^which is why you eat 3 decent size meals. the meal in the morning around the time you wake up helps with metabolism, as would increased physical activity. you don't have to starve yourself to lose weight, just eat sensibly and join a damn gym.

Counting calories in general is not a good way to diet. As long as you exercise and stay active, that is.

My uncle lost a lot of weight since by eating five (5) meals of about 500 calories each day.

[Edited on February 10, 2009 at 11:01 AM. Reason : Also by getting a personal trainer and going to a gym.]

1. eat breakfast (helps kickstart the metabolism)
2. eat 5-7 small meals throughout the day.
3. limit fat and sugar intake
4. exercise (in the morning if possible. helps kickstart the metabolism and gives you energy for the day)
5. lose weight
6. get more pussy
7. profit
