^ sometimes you have no choice, especially when flying into Buffalo

I have several friends from Buffalo who's families still live up there, so i have some text messages out. Trying to see how close their families are to the crash

turboprops hold up a lot better to birds than jets do...

It should also be noted I greatly prefer riding the turboprops because they get to pass all the ground traffic and get in between bigger planes. Probably have saved 30 minutes or better per flight in the takeoff queue.

If given the option to fly or drive from Newark to Buffalo, it would definitely be safer to fly

finally got it on the website:

Quote :

(CNN) -- A Continental airliner crashed into a house in suburban Buffalo, New York, CNN has confirmed.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the plane crashed around 10 p.m. Thursday in the town of Clarence.

CNN affiliate WGRZ reported the plane was heading to Buffalo from Newark, New Jersey.

Officials also said there are multiple fatalities. The FAA also reported two people who were not on the plane were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

I agree planes are much safer than driving, but in terms of plane crashes in isolation, the props are by far the most likely to crash.

they were loaded with fuel I am sure, because that is a short flight and I am sure they were going to turn it right around and fly passengers out of Buffalo to another airport, most likely Newark. Considering, of course, that Newark is a Continental hub.

the loaded plane (full fuel) explains why it is such a massive fire.

Turbo-props are also great for sleeping on, as long as the weather conditions aren't so bad. Stall speed is probably a good bit lower on them too, at least you can hit the ground going slower...

are you aware of the fact that jet engines are actually built to withstand bird strikes from smaller birds? the birds that brought down the flight in the hudson were canadian geese, which are some big motherfuckers

They're all turboprops...functionally not very different from a pure jet (especially a high-bypass turbofan, like you will find on ALL airliners)

I'm not even sure that's the case, but if it is, I would attribute it to less experienced pilots than the heavies have.

but still, they're more than competant enough to do what they're doing--I mean, taking off, flying from point "A" to point "B" at 30k' or whatever...it isn't rocket surgery, and even less so when you do it every day or two where your skills never atrophy. For that matter, I bet they mostly fly the same handful of routes and airports.

ok...i'm not one of these people but i'm not going to lie when i say this solidified my decision to drive on my trip instead of flying...

cost is the same and i like having my car...besides...by the time i go through the hassle of getting a ride and doing the airport thing then the time commitment is basically the same as well...

apparently you are one of "those people".
The statistics of driving vs. flying are overwhelming. If you have other reasons for driving, that's fine, but crashes or safety shouldn't be a factor at all, except in the "pro" column for flying.

For the plane crash? no.

For the FAA Computers getting hacked? yes.

I know that flying is safer overall, but there's a great deal of comfort in holding a steering wheel... At least if I'm in a crash, I can swerve this way and that. Instead of oxygen masks, they should just drop little fisher price steering wheels into everyone's lap so we can feel like we have at least a little control over our final few seconds of life

^ I agree with this statement. I don't even like riding in a car when someone else is driving, makes you feel like your fate is out of your hands.

at least in a car you have some chance of surviving a crash

in a plane you're just SL
