To control a serial port?
http://java.sun.com/products/javacomm/

I'm wondering if I can control something on my MacBook through a USB to serial adapter using a Java program.

Then use the same adapter and program to control it on a PC.

I haven't, but generally you'll need a driver for the usb to serial adapter, as well as the driver for the device itself.

on a pc I don't know that you'll have any issues, but i dunno about the availability of those usb to serial drivers on other platforms

Thanks kiljadn, I've been looking around and it seems the idea of serial port control was pretty much abandoned through the ages.

I'm wondering if it might be easier to try and build a USB interface.

Basically want to interact with the ECE306 micro-controller through a piece of software
