this is just as ridiculous as the "lipstick on a pig" thing.

and there's nothing wrong with the cartoon. i guess the author could have spent more time consciously thinking about who he might piss off. thats the problem, there are no levels. simple combination of 2 big news stories with a little political jab in there. not fucking racism.

al sharpton is the only racist i've seen in the paper today. and i'm sure there are plenty of people who watch the news enough to "get" the cartoon, cause they saw the monkey thing... but he's trying to manipulate people who aren't 100% with the current events, and that really really pisses me off

he's the worst kind of hypocrite... he claims that these folks are either ignorant, don't care, feel disenfranchised, etc, because of oppression and racism, etc. and, i agree that to a certain extent, some of that is true.... with a small percentage of the population

but he need people to feel mistreated. without an army of ignorant followers, he'd be a no-name. it just goes round and round and nothing ever changes, and he stays on tv and is pisses me off

That picture was a whole lotta damn all at once. One because the people who drew it didn't realize the stir they would cause, or thought it was still a good idea to do it, Two the hoopla it's going to cause/is causing, and Three the drawer is a genius pissing off black people, PETA people, and the chimp lover all at once.

The person who drew it definitely knew what was going to happen. If you look at the artists history and where this was published, it's obvious they were aware of the racial undertones that could be perceived in the cartoon.

Sure calling a black man (or woman) a monkey is racist as fuck. But did the cartoonist mean for it to be that way? Maybe he could have meant that we have a bunch of people "monkeying" around with our money.
it definitely was in poor taste by the cartoonist and the editor to allow it to be in the NY Post, but I don't think that anyone was trying to be overtly racist.

I don't understand why it's racist.

Did Obama write the Stimulus Bill? No

Did a group of legislators write the Stimulus Bill? Yes

Were they all black? No

Does the chimp look like Obama? No

Was there a chimp that was gunned down in the news this week? Yes

In fact, I am not even sure why it would be racist if the drawing insinuated it was Obama. Are black people hyper sensitive to primates?

I really don't know. So much of what is and isn't racist is new to me when I hear about it in the news. And I am pretty sure that when Bush was portrayed as a monkey in cartoons for the last 8 years, no one ever said anything about it.

But either way, the editors win because all the plebeians of the world are worked into a slather and drooling on each other about this.

I could be wrong here...but when the cartoonist was explaining the drawing, he didn't even mention the recent chimpanzee attack in the news.

Whether or not he meant it that way...it's still pretty ignorant. But I assume it was on purpose and he's enjoying the attention.

I guess I am not understanding something. I was totally aware of the police shooting the chimp but this cartoon did come the day right after Obama signed the stimulus bill. I am totally aware of the decades of black people being compared to monkeys and I just don't understand how the cartoonist was not aware of this. Al Sharpton makes me sicker than any other opportunist out there but I def think if I were a black woman I would have been offended by the cartoon as well. Hell, I am offended by it anyway.
