yes, i've been there a number of times. it's as rough as you want to make it... the trails range from very hard to mild. your truck should be capable of a good chunk of the stuff there without much trouble. really depends on how much you care about body damage and/or broken parts though.

haha, no regard for body damage , I plan on bringing a few u joints, a spare birf or two, got a extra rear shaft and transfer case in the back, and a set of extra steering knnuckles and studs. Already dealt with broke knuckle studs once b4.

Haha, I finally fixed my powersteering this weekend. Still need to build my rollcage. Hoping to get that started in the next few weeks.

Anyone got a tube bender for sale?

what are the nearest places to wheel from New Bern / Morehead City, besides driving on the beach?

(not that i have anything to do it with at the moment...just for future reference, or maybe if i spot a good deal on an ATV or something)

It'll prolly be cheaper for me to buy one since I'll be doing the rollcage for BOTH my jeep and my roommate's '73 MG (302 swap, 4 link rear, 8" shortened rear axle, blah blah.)

^^nowhere legal. also, you can only drive on the beach down there in the off season. it's not exactly cheap either, your only option is a yearly pass for $75. it used to be you could take the cedar island ferry to ocracoke for a nice day trip, but that whole coast was included in the recent closures.

croatan national forest isn't too far, but it's closed to ohv's now also. it was just a bunch of mud anyway though. no idea if it was a temporary or permanent closure, but it's been a few years so i'd probably assume the later.

so, other than the obvious beach locations, that pretty much leaves your only other options as uwharrie/dpg or dennis anderson's motorsports park. there have been some rumors of someone developing a private off road park somewhere in the rough vicinity of the i40/i95 interchange, but i haven't heard/read anything leading me to believe it's a reality.

[Edited on February 23, 2009 at 2:21 PM. Reason : fwiw, that's for truck places. there might be another option or two for atv's. busco beach is one. ]

yeah croatan is right there. i might even live within the boundaries of it.

URE is way far. maybe i'll put the 4x4 truck thing on hold until i get stationed somewhere else again. I'll have the '66 as my old skool project, anyway. maybe i'll snatch up an ATV (or maybe even a dirt bike) on the cheap if there's anywhere down east worth riding one.

we don't go off road just for the hell of it, but sometimes 4 wheel drive is nice for pulling cow trailers out of muddy pastures, getting around the edge of wet fields, etc...

^^i'm not sure exactly what is going to be closed this season there. it changes yearly, and can even change daily. i think the new info of what will be open and what will be closed was released last week, but i haven't had a chance to look. check the national park service site under the hatterass national seashore section, i'm sure any recent info is on there somewhere.

in the initial closures that took place last year, ALL of ocracoke was closed to orv access. eventually, as all parties involved reached a settlement, very limited areas were reopened. i think it only amounted to like 4-5 miles of access on ocracoke though. as far as i know, the whole southern section and point still remains closed. as you probably know, that's about the only area worth going to if you're only interested in riding around/hanging out.

if you're unaware of what's been going on down there and value having access to your public lands, i would highly recommend and plead for you to get involved at any level. the outer banks preservation association is leading the fight, so you could start there. remember, in this area we're not just talking about losing recreational areas. there are thousands of people that depend on those beaches being open to make a living, whether it be through fishing, tourism, etc.

i forgot about portsmouth island in my previous post... nothing has been bothered with there as far as i know. that's an awesome day trip from ocracoke. it'd be pretty hard to do from the mainland though i think, you'd probably want to camp or rent a cabin for at least a night.
