Figured we could do one like the football one for general advice throughout the year. I'm sure it won't be near as successful as Panthro's but I'm sure theres a good deal of fantasy baseball fans on here. And I know there is the team evaluation thread - but this is for more then that.

So I joined a keeper league midway through last year and took over the last place team at the ASB. Got them up to 10th (out of 16) but I'm looking bad for this year. I need to pick 6 keepers -

Geoff Blum (Hou - 2B,3B,SS)
Johnny Damon (NYY - OF)
Jermaine Dye (CWS - OF)
Edwin Encarnación (Cin - 3B)
Jason Giambi (Oak - 1B)
Ramón Hernández (Cin - C)
Magglio Ordóñez (Det - OF)
Carlos Peña (TB - 1B) 121/490
Jim Thome (CWS - Util)
Chase Utley (Phi - 2B)

Luis Ayala (Min - RP)
Joel Hanrahan (Was - SP,RP)
Matt Lindstrom (Fla - RP)
Kyle Lohse (StL - SP)
Kevin Millwood (Tex - SP)
Mike Pelfrey (NYM - SP)
Yusmeiro Petit (Ari - SP,RP)
José Valverde (Hou - RP)
Chris Volstad (Fla - SP,RP)
Chris Waters (Bal - SP)
Brandon Webb (Ari - SP)

Utley, Webb, Magglio, Dye, Pena, Damon?

I don't know if I like that.

Read please. This is for perpetual advice, not just "I just drafted what do you think". This can continue into the season for trade advice, waiver pickups and what not.

Damon? Nah...

I really think Mike Pelfrey will be a 2nd ace either this year or next. He was a top 10 draft pick, has nasty cut stuff and had a GREAT 2nd half last year and emerged as a legitimate #2... CitiField should be every bit as cavernous as Shea, maybe even more...

Utley, Webb and Pelfrey are no brainers to me.

Then i'd pick two out of Encarnacion, Dye and Maggs.

I think I'm burnt out on fantasy baseball

I'd really like to get a good keeper league going

I think that's the only thing that could suck me back in

^ Yeah I've been the same way, this is my first keeper league and the only part of fantasy baseball I really care about anymore, and I used to be basically obsessed.

^^^ My only reason for Damon is because I just don't see how the Yankees lineup doesn't score a ton of runs. He went on a pretty good streak for me last season and I think he will have a good year this year.

I need to get a closer off waivers and so it's pretty much guys that have a shot at closing

what do you think? Ryan Franklin at STL or Kevin Gregg at Chicago? I was thinking Franklin because Marmol looks like he'll probably be closing... just wanted to get another opinion

You're right, Marmol's closing for sure, while Franklin is competing to be the closer.

Iannetta or Wieters?

Debating which catcher to grab this year since most suck outside of Mauer and McCann.

Those are good catchers....

I am wanting to draft a sleeper with some potential late and am debating between Wieters or Iannetta. Leaning Iannetta since he's already proven some in the majors.

Sandoval

my draft is Thursday

dont reach on a good catcher if you can get a great player at another position

So already a bunch of trades being offered and stuff. What do you think?

I give: Sizemore, Shin-Soo Choo, and Yovani Gallardo

I get: Vernon Wells, Justin Upton, and John Lackey

I'd hang on to Grady...by far the best of those 6

Yeah, I'm short on pitching and Yovani could still be hurting...Lackey is a stud. Only reason I'm considering.

I stole this trade though: I give: Ortiz and Saunders. I get: Beltran and Harden

So I lost Lackey for a couple of weeks. I also have Harden. How healthy is he? I've been offered this trade.

Give: Harden and Bay
Get: Wainwright and Granderson

I don't really like this trade because I am giving up the better player at each position....thoughts?

I like Granderson to have a better year than Bay this season (Granderson balled out 2 years ago) and Harden's health is risky (his career high games pitched in a season is 13)

I might take it

also Lackey started last year on the DL but had a great year, don't worry about him

I wouldn't do it. Bay will be good in that park with a good lineup, harden is nasty when he's healthy

IF he's healthy

and he's never been healthy for a whole season in his career

I'd rather have Harden if I knew he would be healthy, but all evidence suggests he won't be

Well thing is without Lackey I only have Gavin Floyd as a replacement because Price is still in the minors and Scherzer is hurt. John Maine and Chris Young are the best FAs right now with Cueto still available.

I might pick up Cueto if I were you...he started last year on fire, and then fell off, but he's been great this spring

I dunno what rankings you're lookin at, any of those pitchers should be fine unless you have a small league. Chris Carpenter and Fausto Carmona could still be available, they're ranked lower but a lot of people took them anyways, they could both have good bounce back years.

i'm penciling carp in for at least 17 wins, assuming he can stay healthy. carmona is a little trickier, but i picked him up anyway so hopefully he can rebound as well

Ive got an offer in a keeper league of Heath Bell for Ryan Spillbourgh.

Ive already got Fuentes, Wood, Street, and Rodney (Det) as potential close options. Usually you need 3 to really compete in saves in this league.

What do yall think of Spillbourgh's chances of being good this year with full time AB's in Colorado?

not much advice for you, except that all signs point to Huston Street not being the closer...he might even start the season as closer, but Corpas has been much better this spring

anybody know if Berkman played DH in the 'Stros game against their AA team today? his arm or shoulder or something has been all fucked up, I'm starting to get nervous

Should I start Carpenter or Harden this week? They have good matchups vs Pirates and @ Brewers respectively. Whats their status? Should I start Gavin Floyd vs KC or Zach Greinke @KC ironically against each other over them?

channel 984 in Charlotte, still the free preview

and he strikes out with runners at the corners and no outs

I'm glad Chris Davis is finding his rhythm...he went from batting like .054 with 3 runs and no other stats about 2-3 days ago, to hitting a homer tonight for the 2nd straight game

I got some aces like Josh Johnson and John Danks.. so I'm not expecting a Cy Young out of him or anything. But I mean, has he actually slipped into the category of "drop for a guy on a hot streak" yet?

Should I trade Billingsley or Greinke? These guys stock can't get much higher.

I am more sold on Greinke but the Dodgers are actually playing well.

My outfield is pretty set right now, being that I have Markakis, Braun and Ethier. Markakis and Braun are locks. I have a good team (lead by 151.5 in a head to head for the week as of now). 2 questions: Who would be better for me this season at 1st, Gonzalez or Berkman? Also, between Ethier, Kemp & Granderson, who should be the odd man out in the utility & final outfield spot?

assuming you mean Adrian Gonzalez he is definitely a starter. Berkman had a good first half last year, but I would play him mostly as your util or if A.Gonz goes cold. In the OF, it depends on what you need, Granderson might steal a couple more bases, Ethier will be pretty solid all around, and Kemp should give you a little more power. I'd rotate them all day to day based on what I needed, your team seems like it should have a good balance, and if it's head to head i think you're set up well to adjust to what you need.

Yeah, it is Adrian, and he's my guy as of now for next week. I'm definitely not worried about anyone in my league at this point. There may be 1 team that could hang with me, as long as I don't make many rookie mistakes in my 1st season doing this. It did happen last week, and I did lose. If I just paid attention, I would have easily won, but oh well, it may be my only loss. 3rd base was my weakness (though not a bad situation), but I took care of that this week with a trade.
