Quote : | "In 1982, Ari Folman was a 19-year-old infantry soldier in the Israel Defense Forces. In 2006, he meets with a friend from his army service period, who tells him of the nightmares connected to his experiences from the 1982 Lebanon War. Folman is surprised to find out that he does not remember a thing from the same period. Later that night he has a vision from the night of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, the reality of which he is unable to tell. In his memory, he and his soldier friends are bathing at night by the seaside in Beirut under the light of flares descending over the city. Folman rushes off to meet another friend from his army service, who advises him to discuss it with other people who were in Beirut at the same time in order to understand what happened there and to relive his own memory. The film follows Folman in his conversations with friends, a psychologist and the reporter Ron Ben-Yishai who was in Beirut at the same time." |

Pretty good film. I really liked the stories (this is a documentary) told by many of the interviewees. I've read some criticism on this too but I'm not sure that the film is really showing Israel in a good light. Most of the stories are from the younger inexperienced soldiers who had very little to do with the massacres. 3/3/2009 11:52:28 AM |

Yeah, I don't think the film's point was to explain Israel's involvement in the massacre with pinpoint accuracy, but rather to show how each of these individual's memories fit together like a puzzle to give a larger picture of what happened and how it effected each of them emotionally (or not, for some of them). But there are always going to be groups of ultra-liberal critics that dismiss any film that doesn't totally denounce Israel as some kind of anti-Palestinian propaganda.
That said, this is a good movie. The animation is really interesting looking, as well.3/3/2009 12:20:00 PM |
