wtf
you have a cat?
When you make this decision, just know you aren't letting the cat out on a 3rd floor deck. You're letting the cat out. 3/9/2009 7:00:25 PM |

Cats don't try to jump from 3 stories up. If you have a tree close by, or an accessible adjacent deck it could be an issue. 3/9/2009 7:07:54 PM |

we put my roommates cats out on the deck frequently at my 3rd story place. make sure they have water and a carrier to get in during warm days. 3/9/2009 7:56:13 PM |

o im not tryna keep her out there all day unattended
but i mean for an hour or two supervised, i guess im afraid of what could possibly spoook her like if i were to advance toward her to bring her back in
ive only had her for 2 months, she seems settled into me but the sensory overload of being outside might make her nervous
and YES christine i have a cat...whats yer point 3/9/2009 8:30:06 PM |

Supervised should be fine. Even unsupervised most cats would be fine. We had a cat who would jump from the third floor, land on the ground, then walk back around to the front door to be let in No trees or anything, just a straight jump to the ground. 3/9/2009 8:58:08 PM |

my cat jumped from a 3rd story porch.. no tree or other place for it to use on the way down
she trotted right back up the stairs and was waiting at the door by the time we realized she wasn't on the porch anymore! 3/9/2009 9:47:45 PM |

just leave the door open so the cat can come in when it wants. 3/9/2009 9:55:27 PM |

lol true.
We used to let my cat out on the 2nd floor balcony all the time. Then one day she got spooked by my little sister running onto the balcony and jumped. She showed up at the front door a couple hours later 3/9/2009 11:01:25 PM |

yeah it should be fine, as long as there's no tree or whatever. i used to let mine out when i lived in an apt (on the 3rd floor). i stapled screen up on the railing just in case and made sure i watched them so they didn't try to jump on top of the rail. they did fine. one even caught a bird that had made a nest in a hanging basket. 3/10/2009 8:13:02 AM |

mine ran around the railing on the 3rd floor at my apartment a few years back that was scary lol. oh and i think it fell off into a bush one time, too. 3/10/2009 9:03:27 AM |

definitely fine, unless it's a tiny kitten. they can easily survive that fall should they go over. the hardest part is not forgetting them out there all night. 3/10/2009 9:28:05 AM |

A cat won't jump off unless it is certain it will land safely. You have nothing to worry about. 3/10/2009 9:55:20 AM |

I heard somewhere that they have had cats fall of 20+ story window sills unharmed. It worked out that the injuries occured to the lower floor cats because they did not have enough time to right themselves properly, but once the fall was from high enough there were no further injuries, until it was so high up that the cat hit the building on the way down. 3/10/2009 10:43:25 AM |

maybe im stupid or somethin
but i just cant make myself comfortable with that possiblity
i dono maybe i dont know anything abut the physiological makeup of cats, but a three story jump is fuckin high
however my cat does seem to have good sense, i wish there were some way to accurately make that determination
^thats interesting though, it makes sense when you think about it

i had a cat that jumped from the top of a tree that was around that height.
it lived for about 5 minutes after it landed (landed on its feet of course)3/10/2009 12:37:46 PM |
