Quote : | "RALEIGH -- Drivers and law enforcement officers across North Carolina are getting their way.
The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles announced Tuesday that once the current inventory of red-letter plates is depleted, vehicle license plate letters and numbers will once again be printed in blue after drivers and law enforcement officers said the red plates were too difficult to read at a distance.
The red letters have been used on the state's plates for the past two years in an effort to assist with the recall of old and worn plates.
About 1.1 million remaining red-letter plates are expected to be distributed between now and mid-October 2009.
Regular personalized and specialty personalized plates are now printed using blue ink when they are ordered." |

No one could have looked into this before the change from red to blue? NC fails again.

this is really pretty minor.
but i guess if you need to attach yourself to a cause, knock yourself out. 3/11/2009 8:37:27 AM |

minor, sure. but a waste, definitely. I think it's time to be critical of the state and to point out any waste, not to mention stupidity. If they can't get a "minor" thing right, what does that say about "major" things. 3/11/2009 8:46:01 AM |

funny. because "easier legibility" was one of the primary reasons they made the switch to red
I called the fact that they're harder to read before ever even seeing a red plate 3/11/2009 8:57:00 AM |

waste? how so? if they're making the switch after the supply of red plates is depleted...
a waste of my time to worry about something so petty, maybe.
you could spend more time on waste talking about the unnecessary travel some state employees and reps go on. that's more valid and much more expensive. 3/11/2009 10:11:33 AM |

I thought they changed specifically because red was easier to read.
oops. 3/11/2009 10:50:07 AM |

...did they think color blindness was cured or something? Didn't seem like a good idea from the start. 3/11/2009 12:31:05 PM |

at least they didn't waste any money on research before implementing red lettered plates. 3/11/2009 12:33:42 PM |

I am glad we are going back to blue.
I am curious though i thought the reason for the switch to red was to help readability 3/11/2009 11:09:13 PM |

I don't understand how this is a waste. They changed their mind again, but that doesn't mean their going to throw away the existing supply or something. Maybe "The finicky state of NC" would be a more appropriate title. 3/11/2009 11:18:47 PM |

unless it costs a lot extra to change the ink dispensers from red to blue ink, i'm not sure why you are so outraged.
they aren't recalling them either, so what exactly is the problem? 3/12/2009 1:07:03 AM |

yes, this is indeed a waste.
its only a matter of time before the state does away with license plates altogether. 3/12/2009 2:27:16 AM |

the waste isn't in the switch from red to blue. it was in the original switch in the first place, now that they are going back to the original color scheme. 3/12/2009 2:27:22 AM |

it is a waste because the prison where they are printed didn't just buy different paint for shits and giggles. there was a focus group that decided to update the NC plate and they probably contracted some work out to come up with new options- and they chose the least exciting one, changing the ink color. all of that "work" was financed by the tax payers, aka YOU. 3/12/2009 4:53:09 AM |

jesus christ
you people need to find something else to bitch about. this is nothing compared to the rest of NC's wasted spending...go look at education, for one, and DOT for some of their road-building projects.
