I have a 1992 Dodge Dakota V6. I just started experiencing rough idle a couple of days ago. When I am driving, it is fine, but when I get to a stop light, or put it in park, the idle drops like it is going to shut off (and the car shudders), then pulls itself back up. It oscillates between 500 and 1000 rpm every second or two.

In neutral, it doesnt do this, but is idling very high (around 1500-1600 rpm).

I was going to start somewhere simple, like changing the fuel filter and checking the plugs and maybe dumping some injector cleaner in the gas, but I don't know much about where to start to diagnose this, so I was hoping someone here could help point me in the direction of things to check/do to see if I can work this out.

Any help is much appreciated!

^yep. common issue with tbi dodges once they get some miles on them. one reason being many of them suffer from small leaks in the intake plenum gasket which in turn causes build up of oil sludge/gunk in the throttle body and its components. iac is super easy to change though.

they're also real pains in the ass when it comes to relearning idle a/f after anytime the computer has been reset...
