violations for a guy they kicked off the team before he even played a game for them? let's give them the equivalent of the SMU death penalty

Nah, it was stupid for Tom Moore to do that. He knows better and even though he isn't with the program anymore it reflects bad on UConn.

It's a secondary violation at worst and a minor infraction. As far as agent involvement, it reminds me a bit of all the Myron Piggie hassle for UNC/Duke and nothing every came of that.

"phone records show UConn coaches made thousands of phone calls and text messages to Nochimson over the next two years"

jesus fucking christ

assuming "thousands" is at minimum "2,000", thats almost hitting the dude up 3 times a day, every day, for 2 straight years

coaches should be given one special cell phone with a certain plan that only allows a certain number of texts to be used, instead of an unlimited plan

or at least be required to turn in phone records to some regulatory figure with the NCAA

FYI, there was no NCAA regulation on the amount of texts you can send to a recruit or his family during this time period until late 2007, after this happened. Just phone calls. That's why I'm a bit confused about the article and how they combined them.

^ yeah, on the UConn scout.com board the "insiders" who have a great track record say that there is literally no worries from the Athletic Department about this. It's a slap on the wrist violation at worst, and Calhoun pretty much had no involvement. He made 16 calls over TWO YEARS...

Ha. Yeah, they'd just shut down the university.

The agent part is what would have scared me the most if Miles actually every played because by rule, if you have a player who is ineligible (as he would have been) you have to vacate your wins whether the program or head coach know about it or not unless you have Corey Maggette on your team and a Polish head coach

^^ honestly, though... he's nasty. 6'6" shooting guard who has an amazing stroke from 25 feet in. He'd have made UConn the run away favorite this year.

The violations are akin to those that Roy Williams had at Kansas. Likely 3 years probation and a reduction by one scholarship over that time... If you seriously read that and think that the NCAA is going to throw the book at one of its ten most important basketball schools you're crazy...

[Edited on March 26, 2009 at 10:41 AM. Reason : this is peanuts compared to the rosenhaus/miami connection or sc football]

Bump.

http://borgesblognhr.blogspot.com/2010/05/what-weve-learned.html

http://www.uconnhuskies.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/052810aaa.html

-Impermissible phone calls and text messages to prospective student-athletes;
-Impermissible benefits provided to a prospective student-athlete by a representative of the institution's athletic interests; -Impermissible benefit to a prospective student-athlete by a member of the basketball staff;
-Allegations against two (2) members of the basketball staff for providing false and misleading information to the NCAA Enforcement staff and to the institution;
-Providing impermissible complimentary admissions or discretionary tickets;

**** that is the meat of it. Nothing too damning. The "representative" of the institution is some random agent who was a waterboy in like 2000. Still don't like to see that if you're a UConn fan like me. No postseason ban but probably a small recruiting limitation (loss of one scholly maybe but more likely less road travel for an assistant)

on one hand, the coach is at fault, but on the other, he's not. however, he's getting punished regardless. i get what they're saying, but it's worded horribly

another in a long line of horribly bad punishments passed down by the NCAA lately (yes, I'm including the Ohio State ruling too). The coach preaches responsibility to everyone from his assistants to the parents of kids he's recruiting, yet when its time for him to accept responsibility for the actions of people underneath him he is able to plead ignorance and get off with a slap on the wrist.

the one glaring connection between all of the latest NCAA violations from UCONN, to OSU, to Cam Newton, to UNC, to Bruce Pearl etc. etc. is that when you say you were unaware of things you are supposed to be aware of, the NCAA will let you off of the hook. Terrible precedent, and once again the ncaa proves it has absolutely no backbone

head coaches are like mob bosses... they insulate themselves from activities going on beneath them.

Post season ban is the only way to send a message, especially in basketball.

In football, its one game. In basketball, its a whole month.

Not really sure how you can punish UConn equally when said player in question never actually played for the team. Seems pretty fair to me. It's different when the guy actual plays in your program.

That doesnt change the fact that they commited violations to get him there in the first place. if he never signed with uconn then I would agree with you.
