The trend micro from the school that i downloaded goes in and out from offline to online for no reason. Is this normal for this prograIm I saw from a google search that the IP address for this can get messed up and needs to be addressed but since mine seems to go in and out randomly I didn't know if anyone else was having this issue.

I'm using it on several machines now and I haven't seen the issue that you're describing.

I've seen the same thing. I have no idea why it does this.

It's not an issue. That's fairly typical behavior. It claims to be offline only when it's unable to contact its parent server for updates. Since it tries multiple times, it will fix itself after a time. You'll see this crop up most often if you switch between network connections (i.e. taking a laptop between campus and home).

That reminds me, I need to make the transition.

So, why does it have to constantly be online? If it's for nothing more than the occasional update there shouldn't be a problem with it going offline every once in a while. I can see where it would be annoying if a tool-tip message box alerted you about the online status with every transition.

Might as well ask I guess... can you just set the thing to "I'll take care of updates" and save resources by not executing the perpetual ping?

SEP is a better user experience, but trend micro has routinely had faster detection/defs for the past year or so

^ I disagree. Ive noticed consistently that defs are a day behind. SEP always had same day and often multiple times daily updates.

not at all.

much better user experience... and from an administrative standpoint, it's MUCH easier to manage across an enterprise network.

Same day definitions has nothing to do with how well protected you are with said definitions. And more to the point, Symantec released a LOT of bad def sets in the past few years, which caused havoc for lots of IT admins on campus.

User experience isn't as important as the product's capability to actually protect the end user. And ease of management is a highly subjective thing.

So far I've been pleased with the ease of deployment of Trend Micro. Especially since it has a fast installer and doesn't require a reboot of the operating system to be functional. I hate Symantec Consumer products with a passion, and although their Corporate product wasn't horrible, it wasn't extremely effective either.

The offline aspect is barely noticable, besides, most people really aren't going to contract anything while offline, generally speaking.

we've never had a problem with it, and i'd say we have a rather large deployment.

that's actually not true... with the flash vuln and some other vulnerabilities last year, ryan found trendmicro was considerably ahead (1-4 days) with actually catching new mutations of worms and exploits. he often had to submit stuff that came up as positive to the symantec def list
